Saudi star Saleh Al-Shehri on life in Portugal’s top division.
Striker Saleh Al-Shehri is making a name for himself in the Portuguese Primeira Liga after joining SC Beira-Mar, where he has now scored twice in three matches to become the first Saudi Arabian to score in a senior European competition.
There aren’t many Saudi footballers making a name for themselves in Europe, but Saleh Al-Shehri is one of them
The 19-year old joined Beira-Mar at the start of this season, and it’s not just his vibrant pink jacket that makes him stand out – his performances in the Portuguese top flight have stolen the limelight.
Saleh Al-Shehri, Beira-Mar striker:
“I have waited for a long time. I sat on the substitutes’ bench for the first four of five matches and didn’t play at all. My opportunity came when the coach asked me to play in the second half and thanks to God I was able to prove myself and score a goal. After that match I became a regular in the starting line-up. In the second match I scored another goal. I was also among the starting formation in the third match we played in the Cup competition.”
Those goals created a bit of history – Al-Shehri became the first Saudi Arabian to score in a senior European competition.
However it’s a man whose job it is to stop goals that Al-Shehri aspires to emulate – Wigan’s Omani goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.
Saleh Al-Shehri, Beira-Mar striker:
“Of course, (Omani national Wigan Athletic goalkeeper) Ali Al-Habsi is a great player. As you mentioned he is the only Gulf professional who worked hard for his place and did his best to realise his achievements. Now he has made it and he is playing in the English Premier League, the toughest league in the world. No doubt, Al-Habsi is a role model for any ambitious young Saudi (player). I hope to emulate his achievement or surpass it, God willing.”
With Beira-Mar currently bottom of the Portuguese table with seven points from 10 games, the Saudi striker’s goals could prove crucial in their quest for survival.
