CANADA sucked just like the country itself..always lagging ehhhhh
The region is better by having hungry teams that want to grow. Canada is improving, hopefully in time Mexicos federation can turn things around and start sending their best prospects abroad.
Touches that I've seen these same guys make with class dozens of times flew away from them repeatedly.
Either they 'enjoyed' Vegas a bit too much or the moment was too much for them. Same thing happening at the world cup makes me think this group doesn't have it (yet?) mentally.
On most days, a team with three players in top 5 leagues is gonna loose to a team with ten. It's that simple.
As an American I’m excited about what a talented team Canada has. With players Davies and David they’re fun to watch and their play will only make the conference better. Canada has some gaps to fill but feel Herdman has got the most out of the talent he has so far.
The US changed their approach to this game after being out coached in the last two outings and Canada couldn’t counter. Looking forward to the next one.
I also watched the game a second time and in some ways Canada was lucky the game didn't go to 3 or 4 nil. Reyna got hurt and that changed the way the US midfield played. Canada has had problems with the USA midfield and considering they were by the second half missing Adams, McKennie and Reyna it just showed a talent deficit in the middle of the pitch. The addition of Balogun in conjunction with Pulisic and Weah made for a formidable front three and in a game where Pulisic was pretty quiet the American depth was obvious. In the second half the American's changed tactics and to close and suffocate the game. This change significantly hampered perhaps even prevented Canada's strength in the transition game. David and Larin were very quiet up top rarely threatening the American back line. Davies struggled to have an impact despite moving to different parts of the field. The challenge for Canada with better teams is what is the plan or style of play when fast counter attacking is not on. Canada has excellent speed on the wings but if a team moves to a defense that negates this counter attacking wing play can Canada change its tactics. We did not really see that in this final.
You guys always can fall on hockey.💩
The more talented team won. Canada needs a lot more mentally and tactically if it hopes to beat superior teams like USA regularly.
Gonna be honest. I didn't expect us to win, but I thought we'd at LEAST put up a better fight than THAT. After all we've been through, lads? Really?
On the CSA political side, it will be interesting to see if they are open to hosting matches which are money makers and are providing a true team-building challenge, but are politically controversial.
I continue to be upset by the decision to cancel the exhibition match with Iran last summer. I don't care about Iran, and politically it's a vicious totalitarian state. However BC Place was sold out, and they presented a real challenge for Canada on the field. So, it is fair to say we will never be able to compete with the USA for funding. However, it is hard to hear about CSA having fiscal constraints after they turned their back on a match which would have raised about $2 million in revenue, and given the team valuable experience.
Our defenders suck and we need to start converting players like Kane into a center back. Everyone see Kenedy and Victoria are not the guys and we are not strong enough to play 3 in the back.
We really need Herdman to start learning from his mistakes. It feels like he is still experimenting when games are on the line. There’s a time and place for experimenting. His lineup against the US was weak. The team also looked dejected. We desperately need to learn how to play defence
Herdman is a fraud ! Three defenders , really. Kennedy s a third division player !
Given the limited training time of 4 vs 10 days, was starting different formations in the two games the way to go?
"If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much." –Jim Rohn
Oliver needs to watch the game for a third time my god man it could have been 5 Nil 🤦♂️Are u serious ?
So wrt Alfonso, KJ is revealing an unpopular truth about soccer. There are only a couple of positions on the field where the sport allows one to be a superstar. Basically it's positions 9 & 10 (and keeper) and guess what, Alfonso doesn't excel at the skill sets needed to be a top #9 or #10. The best he can do is take a position – like wingback – and play it well. Shut down the opponent's offense on their right and be a threat on the left. When one tries to do more from the wingback position, you are simply disrupting your teams synergies. Someone needs to tell Davies that he's not a superstar, but he is extremely good at a wingback role. Let's face it, Davies can't be a Messi or Neymar.
The problem isn't that they bad for 90 minutes, the problem is that they allowed two goals in the first third of a match. That is the absolute worst for them as they are still not good at breaking down a deeply defensive opponent with a 2 goal lead. And to be fair, many great teams around the world have had the same problem. Knowing that, Canada needs to learn 1) how not to give up early goals that put them in hole, and 2) what to do when that happens.
Watch Eustaquio, Osorio and David closely – their first touches were horrendous all match. Davies and others not much better. To be a top midfielder or striker, first touch is CRITICAL. and then yes I would agree with Wheels that their decision making wrt passing, and people running off the ball to create open spaces, was sub par. Borjan also should have done more on that first goal, but hey no one is perfect. Finally, for three years Vitoria has been our Center Back. Why was Kennedy starting their in their biggest match for a decade? That's on Herdman. On the other side, I was very happy to see Herdman start with a 3-5-2, but for some reason both Davies and Laryea played more as wingers than wing backs. Both are amazing defenders and yet I really don't recall seeing either of them doing much defending. The whole purpose of the 3-5-2 is for the wingbacks to cover a lot of ground. Somehow that got lost Sunday and I'm not sure why?
It was disappointing to lose the game, and I there were a few lineup decisions that I disagreed with, but I still support Herdman 100% and can't understand the excessive negativity towards him that I've seen on the internet. Prior to him taking over, the CANMNT had never made the world cup in my lifetime, and I'm not that young. We hadn't even qualified for the final qualification round of world cup qualifying since 1998. Putting things into perspective, when we qualified for the world cup and played well enough to beat Belgium, it would be like if Japan qualified for the Olympic hockey tournament and Sweden was extremely lucky to beat them by one goal. Getting to the final of a major CONCACAF tournament is another huge step forward. I'm glad that they're still pushing to get better, but to be honest I'm pretty excited to be solidified in the top 3 in CONCACAF.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED = 2023 CONCACAF NL FINALS = USMNT CHAMPS!
Herdman is correct. The truth is, Canada isn't really serious about anything involving superior competence. We elect useless virtue-signaling politicians and squander our resources without adding much value to them. Our industry is not aggressive and very rarely are considered at the top of their fields globally. I have lived 20 years abroad and nobody there can name a Canadian corporation that is having much impact. Our cities are falling apart and have been doing so for 40 years. Toronto hasn't added a significant subway line in over have a century. Ontario hasn't replaced aging nuclear plants that is a decade overdue. BMO field is an embarrassment and yet it's one of the best places to play pro sports in the country! We throw money at all the wrong things rather than demanding better competency – think healthcare for example. We think women's sport is paramount when most of the world don't care for it and likely never will. Specific to soccer, I don't see any strong commitment from government or corporate sponsorship. If Canada was serious about soccer, that Woodbine development would be breaking ground this summer and BMO field would be transitioned into something impressive. Hell we built Ontario place over 50 years ago and have just left it to rot. I hate to say it, but Canada doesn't have a winners mentality.
Bottom line is that Canada and Canadians rarely make much of an effort about being good yet alone the best. We like being comfortable and safe. We're for socialism, not excellence. We're more interested in Alphabet Soup Pride than Athletics. Someone like Damian Warner is an anomaly. Put someone like him in charge of Sports Canada rather than a Trudeau equity poster girl like Pascale St. Other. We now have another equity hire at the top of Soccer Canada – Charmaine Crooks. Well because she's black and female, she MUST be good right? She was interviewed on OneSoccer and her top priority is to produce SAFE SPACES in athletics. Really? That's the problem with Canadian sports? One of the most ethnically diverse countries on the planet who just happens to be one the richest due to it's natural resources, needs more "safety" in sports as a priority?
How is the CANMNT going to get flush with cash when 1) one can't even watch a match on cable TV; 2) nobody even knows where there's a home match 3) there is no advertising raising the profile of the team and players and 4) we naively think that there should be some sort of misguided pay equity for women's soccer in the country – classic case of spreading not enough butter over too many pieces of toast. We can't get the CPL to be financially healthy and we have an equity hire for Canada Soccer chirping about a women's Canadian professional soccer league and more safe spaces. Garbage in garbage out. Put incompetence in charge, get…
So Oliver answer this question on air to your viewers: can we really expect to grow the men's game in Canada with limited resources while pretending that women's soccer matters equally?
Davies hasn’t found his place in this team and hasn’t played in months. Why he doesn’t go to the gold cup with these things in mind, makes no sense to me.
Canada Soccer needs to get their budgets on par with the Americans if they are to stand a chance in 2026.
As an american, canada has a bright future!! I dont think you all should give up on Herdman!! He has done a great job n look what he did for qualifying!! One bad game doesnt= give up!! I tell u id rather have him then berhalter anyday!! Good luck u guys!!!❤
Don't worry Canada! Your favorite opposition coach, Gregg Berhalter is coming back to wreck the USMNT again! He's definitely going to revert back to an MLS heavy starting lineup, and he'll make sure Gio Reyna never plays at the CAM spot ever again, either benching him or isolating him out on the right wing (Berhalter's favorite place to hide Gio on the field). Also, he'll bring back his totally predictable tactics to make sure that Canada knows exactly how to completely stuff the USMNT attack, while at the same time leaving huge holes in the defense that Canada can drive a bus through and win! I have two words for you to look forward to – Aaron Long! He'll spot you guys at least one goal a match. Then there's Jesus Feirrera, Gregg's favorite non-striker, playing at the 9! Don't have to worry about that Balogun fella, he'll be riding pine until the 89th minute!
