  1. If there's a chance of getting him specifically or otherwise missing out, then keepers priority. Apart from that it's striker then keeper.

    Realistically need both

  2. I definitely agree De Gea needs replacement bad and Onana would be great. But United fans need to calm down on hating on DDG. A legend of the club and was the best keeper in the world for a lot of years

  3. The guy literally comes out of his goal to sweep up and simultaneously initiate an attack when he's being pressed by world class forwards in a CL final. He's got some cajones.

  4. I don't know what is going on with the age profile at utd but this guy is 27 already
Utd should only get him if he'll be there for the next 5yrs at least
Liverpool have had Alisson for over 5yrs now , city have had ederson for years now
    I'll take Costa for 60mil
I love onana but look how mendy has declined
Can onana stay completely away from injuries and do this for the next 5-6 yrs at the highest level maybe like
    Manuel Nuer
    That's very important
    His longevity

  5. I was quite vocal that Man United should sign Onana for free last summer. Even if Man United now need to pay around 50 mil for him he is worth it. Still I'm more keen on that we get a proper no 9 as first priority and goalkeeper second.

  6. Technically, yeah. He did well under Ten Hag at Ajax. However, Ten Hag had a falling out with the player after he was suspended and Ten Hag kept patience with him only for him to move on a free to Inter.

  7. and our CB pairing was Lindelöf and Harry Maguire under Ole… And how many goals did Harry concede. Also, other than City and Liverpool United had the best defense with DDG under the sticks…

  8. Dave diogo Costa will be a great signing to right he is more younger then onana,so he can stay for a decade and Costa has all the traits from onana right

  9. Just remember we could've had him on free. Also Donnarumma and then Alaba Mazraoui Skriniar… We are missing out big time on good players on free transfers.
    Why are we chasing Mount?
Lewandowski I think perfect for us. Moura free. DeVrij free.
And then either invest in KMJ or a central mid like DeJong.
Of course if any chance to get Mbappe that would be ideal.

  10. He's terrible at catching the ball, almost always just pushes it back into play. Also, goalkeeper stats for Serie A are not comparable the Premier League.

  11. I think another huge benefit to signing Onana is that it would almost single-handedly allow Jaden Sancho to put in elite performances on the left wing. It might sound a little strange, but I think it makes sense. It's a bit of a wall of text though, so you'll have to bear with me.

Sancho has struggled on the left with a fullback like Shaw behind him. He works really well when surrounded by players he can link up with, which on the left wing means that he benefits hugely from an overlapping fullback, and that's just not Shaw. Ten Hag has tried to 'solve' this by playing him as a 10 and Bruno Fernandes out wide, but this seems like a bit like a game of musical chairs where nobody plays where they'd really prefer.

Malacia is a bit more of an attacking fullback than Shaw, but there are two issues. First off, he's not putting in the same level of performances as Shaw. This means less playing time, but even then, you might expect the pairing of Malacia and Sancho to work when rotating Shaw, and United could even improve significantly here by selling Maguire and signing an elite attacking fullback like Alphonso Davies. Easy, right? Except there's another issue. If Malacia looks for the overlap, what happens to the space this leaves behind?

The obvious solution is for the left-sided midfielder to drift wide when the fullback overlaps, but if that midfielder is Eriksen, then there's a problem. Eriksen is really intelligent positionally, and this makes him a really good presser, and good at denying passing lanes. It's not easy to keep someone like Salah or Saka or Silva/Mahrez quiet like that, but Eriksen could do an okay job, at least when it comes to preventing the direct pass. But if the opposition plays a long ball down the line, then Eriksen is going to lose that footrace. I love Eriksen, but it's the truth. The alternative is for Eriksen to stay 'southside' of the winger; not trying to prevent the direct pass, but having a head start on the footrace. If the opponent beats the press, however, and plays the direct pass, then the main defender between the likes of Salah and a chance at goal is Christian Eriksen, and that really doesn't play to Eriksen's strengths.

This could of course be solved by playing Mount (or someone like Mohamed Camara if they can't get Mount for a a reasonable price) as the 8, either on the left or the right. This would allow for two defensively solid midfielders in Casemiro and Mount/Camara, which would allow for whoever plays on the left to much more easily drift out wide to protect the area the fullback leaves behind. This sounds perfect…. but there's another catch.

This whole setup, each change requiring a change elsewhere, would leave United in an extremely restricted position. For Sancho to play well out left, you would need to both play an attacking fullback behind him and your new 8 at the same time. If Mount comes off for Eriksen, the whole thing becomes a bust, and everyone starts playing worse. You've practically back to square one, where you're either not giving your players the tools to succeed (Malacia/Davies not being able to overlap makes them and Sancho worse) or you have to make big compromises elsewhere. It's a solution on paper, but not over the course of a 38 game season + cups ´+ European football.

But Onana, I believe, is the solution here. He pushes out much further than the likes of Diogo Costa or David Raya. This allows the centerbacks to split much wider, which is the key to this whole thing working. Now, a long ball down the line basically means playing it to the feet of the left-sided centerback, be it Martinez or Shaw. Eriksen might still not have an easy time restricting the direct pass to a world-class winger, but it's playing much more to his strengths than trying to tackle the ball away from them. This allows for the left fullback to overlap much more easily, whether that is Malacia or a new signing like the aforementioned Davies, which means Sancho would have the tools to succeed on the left much more readily.

As a knock-on benefit, this would mean that Rashford can play up front with less of a cost to the rest of the team. You have another left winger you would expect elite performances from, meaning you can play Fernandes as a 10, Antony on the right, and have a really strong squad. Does this mean that United shouldn't sign a striker? No, they absolutely should. But they're less desperate. This means that someone like Højlund is a more sensible signing, as he would be able to rotate with Rashford semi-regularly, rather than having the main alternative be Martial. If Rashford up front has as high a cost as it did last season (making both the rest of the team worse, which in turn gave him less to work with as a striker), United might feel forced into paying over the odds for a star striker like Kane or Osimhen. Less so with Onana.

There you have it – Onana would make Sancho much better on the left wing and improve the striker position at the same time. If you read this whole block of text, you're an awesome nerd, and I appreciate you. Please correct any mistakes you can see in my analysis – I'm here to learn as well 🙂

  12. We're probably going to end up paying £60 + million on Mount, then we HAVE TO improve our attack by signing at least one striker! That'll cost us at least another £60 million. The only way we're gunna sign this guy as well is if we actually sell some players! And we all know how useless Arnold, Murtough and co are at that!

  13. GK first GK second GK third because gk is the FOUNDATION of the team . Without getting gk position right we cannot really make a correct judgement on the team performance . This is what happening at MU . The comments are ALL OVER THE PLACE !

  14. How can you say we should change our goalkeeper will improve us scoring goals more than adding a striker 🤣🤣 this is where football nerds intelligence ends in making practical sense. This is a team whose only striker options are Rashford (better of the left) and Martial (can’t stay fit to save his life). But it’s the goalkeeper still capable of a golden glove that we need to improve on to score more goals. How stupid are people so obsessed with our goalkeepers ability on the ball when we don’t have a midfield that’s good with the ball. You dominate teams first by having a solid ball playing/retention midfield not cause the goalie has good passing

  15. Hey Dave. Please scout the 18 year old Swedish goalie named Filip Sidklev. If the the other Dave (De Gea) stays as goalkeeper may not be a priority position to strengthen this summer, we can sign Sidklev for the future. He is good with his feet, still young and will learn a lot about keeping clean sheets from Dave.
