Pep Lijnders’ spoke about Takumi Minamino and his role in Jurgen Klopp’s squad ahead of Norwich City vs Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Minamino has struggled to make an impact since arriving from RB Salzburg in January 2020, with the Japan international joining Southampton on loan for the second half of last season.

However, the forward could be in line for a start at Carrow Road on Tuesday against Norwich.

And Lijnders, Klopp’s assistant manager at Liverpool, was enthusiastic about the intelligence and potential of Minamino.

  1. Taki is just “wow”but gets bodied by a 16 yrs old. I don’t know if he would get the game time here at Liverpool. He is decent player for bottom half teams.

  2. Minamino shined at his old club because the general standard was a lot lower, he hasn’t been awful at Liverpool, but he’s just nowhere near as good as the front 3, and you could play him in midfield but again there’s probably 6 or 7 players you’d put there before him. It’s a shame because he does have talent but I just don’t think he’s good enough. You’ve got to ask yourself, would he get into these squads, city, United, Chelsea, Liecester. No way on earth would he get into the first 3, Maybe Liecester but even then he probably wouldn’t start all the time, and if we want to finish above these teams then we at least need to aim for a similar standard of player. We got him for dirt cheap so it’s not like a big loss or anything but I can’t ever see him doing damage like our other players. Would like to see him be sold on to be honest.

  3. I can’t understand why people say that Taki is not good enough or hasn’t been good for us, every time I’ve seen him play for us he’s been really good. The only problem that I could see was communication bc a lot of times him and Salah would go for the same ball. He was really good against Palace and in the cup game that he played in (can’t remember the team but I remember we played in that bluish kit), there isn’t that much more to go off bc he hasn’t really played that many games for us yet.

  4. Taki is a great squad player to have. He came in the time of Covid and struggled with isolation and notngetting to properly get to know his team mates. The the injuries hit and he could not get chances as Klopp needed to keep stability by playing the same front 3. So he got loaned out and did good. Showed he had the level to be a squad player with maybe potential for more. Time will tell. For the price we payed for him, he is a steal. Can play no. 9, winger and midfielder. Great guy as well. Never any trouble and probably trains well and is professional to the T.

  5. He's a bust… I had huge hopes for him. Thought he was going to be better. Has not shown ANY flashes of potential. Last year he was crap at S'hampton too. Average squad player that brings nothing to the table. BYE Felicia… time for him to go…

  6. People still haven't got thier heads around that Liverpool is packed full of class and extremely difficult to get into the squad I mean if they get on the bench that's an achievement these days.
Wed been patchy for decades we simply are not that team anymore and I think it's become a habit to think that it's easy to walk in the sqaud and play week in week out.
Like they say in this video it's one of the reasons we haven't signed many players because theres not many that would improve on what we already have.

  7. Klopp says all these nice things about players who can’t get into his starting 11 to artificially inflate their value. It’s his version of placing a premium so the club can sell at a profit. Nothing wrong with singing praises of your players, it’s just that the trick isn’t working anymore.

We lost money on Shaqiri and other clubs have learnt how bad the Brewster transfer was.

  8. If you play Taki alongside players who can supply & create for him, you'll see the deadly side of him 🔥🔥
Most of the time last season, we saw him pairing up with Origi, no disrespect to Origi but he doesn't create lethal chances 🤷🏾‍♂️. However, when you pair him up with Salah, Mane or Bobby, he is remarkable 🙌🏾

  9. People forget taki was arguably the best player of the field when we played his team in the champions league so much so that even the players “according Klopp himself” wanted him to buy him lol

  10. Why don’t these journalists speak clear and precise, instead of mumbling and saying err errr errr, making it hard for foreign speaking people. Clear and easy to understand

  11. Then why go buy a player if you think he is not yet good enough to fit into the team, just give him decent game time and stop all this bullshit sweet praise talking about this player, I'm sure most of us supporters want see him play it's only fair on him.

  12. Takumi regularly performs well in preseason games and for his national team. I feel like Klopp doesn't want to upset Mane… I think Takumi is the kind of player we bought for against teams that like to defend alot.

  13. Curtis Jones isn't "some way away from becoming a regular". He's right there… the problem is, he has the likes of Fab, Hendo, Thiago etc ahead of him

  14. I think outside of the club we, fans and media, seem to focus on “the first team”. But more and more clubs, especially LFC, and probably the other top six, focus on a “squad”. Pep mentioned here the squad of 16. Look how many really good young players we have in our 16. The coaches must have explained early on to the players it’s not just the 1st team now, but a squad ethos. Like Pep said, that’s what saved us at the end of last season, and why it will really help us this year. Watch the training videos that come out. There must be about 20-25 players all doing the same training. Older pros, young lads all working together for LFC. That’s why I’m not that bothered about buying expensive “stars” in the last transfer window. Those we have know the LFC way and can step in straight away.

  15. I would like Taki to start this Saturday instead of Mane and Ox to start instead of Hendo.
There is absolutely zero risk to it.. We need these players on fire incase our first choice players are having an off day.
Unfortunately Klopp to scared to experiment 🤷‍♂️
