In Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, there is a professional football team called Stoke City Football Club. When Stoke-on-Trent was given city status in 1925, the organization that had been founded in 1863 as Stoke Ramblers underwent two name changes: Stoke Football Club in 1878 and Stoke City in 1925. It was one of the 12 original members of the Football League when it was founded in 1888. It participates in English football’s second division, the Championship.

When they defeated Chelsea 2-1 in 1972, they won the League Cup, their first and only major prize to date. In the 1935–1936 and 1946–1947 seasons, they finished fourth in the league standings in the first division. They participated in the 2011 FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester City, and made it to three FA Cup semifinals in 1899, 1971, and 1972. In 1972–73, 1974–75, and 2011–12, they participated in European football competition. In 1992 and 2000, they won the Football League Trophy.

Stoke’s home ground is the 30,089 all-seater, bet365 Stadium. Before it was opened in 1997, the club was based at the Victoria Ground, which was their home ground since 1878. The club’s nickname is The Potters, after the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent, and their traditional home kit is a red-and-white vertically striped shirt, white shorts and stockings. Their traditional rivals are Midlands clubs West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, whilst their local rivals are Port Vale with whom they contest the Potteries derby.
