AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli said that his side had been “exceptional” in their run to the Champions League semi-finals this season – as they prepare to face city rivals Inter in the first leg of their last four tie on Wednesday.

Milan are fifth in Serie A – one place below Inter – and have surprised many by reaching this stage of the Champions League, beating the new Italian champions Napoli in the previous round.

The clubs have ten European Cups between them, Milan needing to go back to 2007 for their last win in the competition.
