CF Montréal are moving on to the 2023 Canadian Championship semi-finals after defeating bitter rivals Toronto FC 2-1 at BMO Field.

Hernan Losada’s side put on a comprehensive showing in their eventual victory, with Zachary Brault-Guillard getting the scoring party started by finishing off a powerful counter-attack off a turned over free kick on the other end of the field. Then, four minutes later and just moments before half-time, Mathieu Choiniere delivered an inch-perfect cross to Chinonso Offor, who placed his effort easily past Sean Johnson for Montréal’s second.

A Lorenzo Insigne strike cut Montréal’s lead in half, though it did look dubiously offside from the initial angle, but may have been just slightly behind Richie Laryea when the pass was made.

Regardless, it would matter not in the end as Montréal cruised to victory with a comfortable second half showing, marked by resolute defensive play to give their head coach a birthday to remember.

Montréal now faces Forge FC of Hamilton for the third year running in the next round of the Canadian Championship, having eliminated Toronto FC earlier on than usual in this competition.

  1. Toronto in the mud.
Their stadium is half empty for the Canadian classique, they lose at home and their supporters attack the travelling Montréal fans in the stands.
All of that while having the two biggest stars in MLS on their roster.
    Truly a pathetic club 😂

  2. Quito missed 2 big chances, first too slow to get a chip and 2nd to the sky when he should have belted it low. Nevertheless, nice to see MTL reclaiming some spots in the table and building up confidence in tournaments. Hopeful they'll smash Toronto twice in 1 week.

  3. What a effort from ZBG to block Insigne’s shot on one end, run across the field, find the loose ball, and put it in the back of the net

  4. Damn Toronto fans salty as fuck. The Montreal fans here, on the other hand, seem to be very positive and all around good winners. See you in the final!
