In 2013, everyone knew who the third best player in the world was. Gareth Bale was coming off a career season with Tottenham and was just about to turn 24, attracting interest from every big club in Europe. With outstanding pace, strength, and a vicious shot from range, Bale was regarded as the closest thing to Cristiano Ronaldo in world football, and Real Madrid paid a then world record €100m fee to pair the Welshman and the Portuguese in a new-look attack, which would go on to deliver the club’s 10th Champions League title that season and a further 3 over the next 5 years.
But despite his enormous trophy cabinet, Bale’s career in Madrid is widely considered a disappointment. Unloved by coach and fans, the winger has been a bit-part player for years and perennially linked with a move away which never quite arrives. But how did the most exciting player in the world become surplus to requirements? And why didn’t the Real faithful ever fall for a man who had been so easy to love at White Hart Lane?
Hello and welcome to Everything You Need To Know, the new series where we give you the story behind some of football’s defining moments, and today we bring you the story of Gareth Bale.

What happens, when a person is Lazy, and have lots of money.
They do what they whant. Thats what Bale does better, besides playing golf, in Wich is not soo good.
Ps : and you say, he was the closest thing to Cristiano Ronaldo… Man, Just to be as half as good as Cristiano, its an achivement of a lifetime.
And Bale, is not one of those.
IS LAZY. Just saying that, its an offense to Ronaldo, the most Professional Football player of all time.
And the most exciting player in the world (part), Jesus,, do u see or like Football, for real, or you do vídeos, Just, for fun, cause, Football is a subject, that u are not very confortable commenting.
I wonder what spurs fan would have to say if the man won them 4 cl trophies
He is still class scored two goals today
"Career in Madrid is widely considered a disappointment" are you having a laugh? Between 2014 and 2018 he was unreal, and clearly the 3rd best player in the world by a country mile. Funny how people forget how phenomenal he was during those seasons.
Bale is a great player who gets disrespected by the Spanish media. It’s like pogba.
Apart from ronaldo and messi, bale is best player of the decade
Bale is injury prone but works hard and always trying to prove to everyone to be worthy when on the pitch. Meanwhile, Hazard is just….
As a Madrid fan I can say that Bale is worth every bit we paid for him in transfer and wages. In comparison PSG, United, and City have all spent close to a billion each this past decade and that a grand total of zero UCL titles to show for it.
The bernabue jeers him now but we once sang his name with great joy and anticipation. Nobody can change what has happened in the last few years. Similarly, no one can take away what Bale has done for us. He is a Madrid legend through and through and in a few years, I hope we can all look back at his time in Madrid with great fondness.
Same story as Benzema's , they re both amazing players who werent allowed to shine
I remember people comparing him to Ronaldo mad to think that now considering how far ronaldo went on to become one the of greatest ever if not the greatest player ever and bale will be remembered as a world class player who fell to off early
Wales. Golf. Madrid. Lmao.
Good vid but ditch the 2.8 passess and key dribble nonsense.
dispite what you say about bale he will still go down in history as one of arguably best madrid wingers of all time
"Fall of Gareth Bale"? Haa! He has just tonight sealed his countries place in the Qatar World Cup final. I sense English envy on the part of the English Journos again. Screw you lot: we'll top the group ahead of England, just as we did in 2016–the year England were knocked out by Iceland: a team made up of Reindeer herders, postmen and librarians who did not even have any grass on which to practice. Favourite Welsh pastime? Humiliating England.
thank you real madrid fans, you know how to disrespect a human. just because you like an other player more than him
"The bigger they are, the harder they fall."- Leonardo (Ninja Turtles)
Bale joined Los Angeles FC.
Now in 2022 he's going to a club can actually play in
He had serious potential to be one of the greatest ever its such a shame
Bale was a great player, but the real Madrid president favored him over Ronaldo, this lead to ancelotti, zidane, and Cr7 departure
Knee surgery?
Who is here after he just announced his retirement at only 33 years old ? 💔💔
And I'm here again after I saw that he retired. He was my favorite player so yeah it's nice to see him moving on to do other things in life after an amazing career.
Gareth Bale is one of the best football players in the world, stay mad at that fact.
