When João Mário was going through the youth ranks of football, he was regarded as one of Portugal’s top talents for the future. As his career rolled on however, moves to Inter, West Ham and Lokomotiv Moscow looked certain to derail his career. However, upon returning to Portugal via Sporting, things got back on track – and after trading in the green of Sporting for the red of Benfica, his career has reached heights that we’ve never seen from João Mário. Under Roger Schmidt, João Mário has become not only an integral player, but a genuine star in Portuguese football again, doubling his total goals scored in a single season.

  1. Great video. Just to add to your information, Sporting were not truthfull with Inter and that's one of the reasons why he came to Benfica. Sporting had Inter belive that they would pay 10M for João Mário but then only offerd 6M

  2. you could do an analysis of portugals new formation 343 next and if it fits the portuguese player depth in the future
for me we lack at the centre back position… ruben dias being world class but others like pepe and fonte aging and danilo being too weak… antonio silva has already shown that he has what it takes, but is not yet a seasoned player yet, I dont think highly of goncalo inacio but I like to be proven wrong, maybe diogo leite is just 1 season wonder?..
with the rest of the positions we are pretty solid

hope you consider it in the future

  3. As an Inter fan I feel like this video gave me closure on Joao Mario.
He was personally the player who frustrated me the most because he clearly had the ability to be a top midfielder but just never seemed bothered to show at Inter.
No bad feelings though, happy he's doing well for Benfica now. 👍

  4. João Mário is a strange players, is not just he being out of positions, João Mário is a top players but he need the right circumstances to shine, if the team is playing well and motivated João Mário is the best players of the team but if the team is not motivated and needs a shake João Mário just sunk with the team. He simply lacks the intensity and aggressivite to change the game.

  5. During Benfica's first match against PSG this season, at a certain point the team looked shaky, with the ball on his feet and Mbappe in front of him, João Mario tried to send the ball one side and outrun from the other. Ofc it didn't work coz he was against probably the fastest accelerator in the sport, but he sent a message to his team there. He did that play because that was the right play to try there, it didn't work, but he wasn't gonna change the way he played because he was against PSG or Mbappe. The confidence levels were through the roof to even attempt this and the team took after him and litteraly started outplaying PSG. He is being nothing less of a captain right now and leading the team forward.
