Alphonso Davies is a striker. But also, Alphonso Davies is a winger. And also, Alphonso Davies is a left back. If only there were some way to combine them a– AH. There is, indeed. And it’s a left wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, the exact system that John Herdman has implemented in his first two matches in 2023, post-FIFA World Cup.

With Davies at LWB and one of Richie Laryea or Tajon Buchanan at RWB, the CanMNT have looked impressive, as a midfield trio of Stephen Eustaquio, Ismael Kone and Jonathan Osorio bring much-needed dynamism, creativity and defensive discipline to the middle of the park. Plus, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David can operate as a duo up top, and a back three of Alistair Johnston, Kamal Miller and Steven Vitoria is about as solid as Canada can get.

So… is this it? Have we cracked the code? Is this John Herdman’s Krabby Patty formula!? We discuss the future of Canada’s tactical arrangement on tonight’s episode of OneSoccer Today.

  1. This was the best starting config and the best the CanMNT has played, with the possible exception of the first half against Belgium.

  2. 3-5-2 was always the preferred lineup. It just wasn’t possible through most of qualifying because one of Larin or David were not available.

The main drawback to that formation is that our lack of striker depth after those two drops off significantly. Starting both Larin and David harms attack in the last 20-30 minutes. If we’re tied late, and Larin+David have already put in a hard 70+ minutes, who is our super sub?

  3. I mentioned it in 2 other videos, because if anyone watched young Marshall Rutty play vs SAN Jose for Toronto FC this past week, he was outstanding on defence. His skill set was silky slick and so impressive and he showed that he has an elite soccer IQ, utilizing his skills to defend and create offensive opportunities. He may well be the next surprise player to join this team in a major way within the next year. I sure hope that he continues to shine.
