On this episode of OneSoccer Today, Andi Petrillo, Jordan Wilson and Oliver Platt take a deep dive on John Herdman’s latest Canada men’s national team roster, ahead of upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches vs. Curacao (March 25) and Honduras (March 28 at BMO Field in Toronto), which you can watch right here on OneSoccer!

Going through the list, we begin with St. Louis City SC’s Kyle Heibert getting a late call-up to replace an injured Kamal Miller, before taking a look at the no. 1 goalkeeping situation, the Canadian backline, how Ismael Kone fits into the midfield picture, and the in-form trio of Alphonso Davies, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David.

0:00 – Kyle Heibert called up

  1. Borjan
    Johnston
    Victoria
    Cornelius
    adekugbe
    Tajon
    Stephen
    Kone
    Davies
    David
    Larin

For me this is the best lineup to put out coming into Toronto on Tuesday and test somebody next to Victoria

  2. Borjan had a spectacular qualifying run and maybe a lack lustre World Cup. So to me, 2023/24 will be about which Borjan now suits up for Canada. Johnston is just too short to be the CB we need. Height is very much needed for both the Keeper and CB positions: min 6'3 or 6'4 for CB and 6'5" for GK. It is also preferable for at least one center midfield to be tall, and we that in Kone if he matures into a quality player. Currently I feel Kone is totally unproven.

  3. Here is my take on the 7 most important conclusions that Herdman needs to arrive at, and the sooner the better: 1) phase Hutchinson, Wotherspoon and Henry out; 2) keep Davies on the outside of the pitch – he's terrible in the center; 3) give up on Cavalini, Kaye and Ugbo until such time they find a way to turn heads in club play; 4) give Kennedy, Cornelius and Waterman more playing time to see which might be ready to step up – in the very least find a replacement for Vitoria by 2024; 5) don't push Kone too fast and be prepared for the possibility that he doesn't become what you dream for him; 5) focus on keeping Borjan as the keeper but integrate St Clair more and more. Crepeau will not cut it as #1 GK but is a solid 3rd stringer for the foreseeable future; 6) keep bringing in young talent to keep options open; and 7) teach these young men to get their minds out of the woke politics with the women's team and rather focus on making some cup finals in preparation for a QF run in 2026.

  4. THANK YOU PLATT-INI ! Two wingbacks. @jaydon alves my starting lineup is almost exactly the same as yours but with tweaks.
    5:3:2
    Strikers: Larin & David obvious
Wingbacks: Davies left, Tajon right still obvious
Centrebacks: Vittoria (Kennedy, Cornelius), Right: Alistair, Left Adekugbe (converted)
Mid: Centre Eustaquio as an 8 or old school 10 the General, Left Laryea as a 6 (converted), Right Kone as a 6

Phonzie & Tajon have free reign on the sides; Midfield breaks up attacks from the opposition, controls and advances, 3 CB's gives extra defense, then 2 of the hottest strikers in Europe do the poaching!

  5. Is this guy for real, it’s not about age? WTF? Buddy father time is undefeated, perfect record, never been beat. In what world have you watched AH and said “that guy still gets around the pitch fast/smart enough for me”. Look I love Atiba as much as anybody. I cried and am not afraid to admit it when he both broke the caps record and had that beautiful head scoring against El Salvador but I am sorry he needs to be used as a come in last 20-25 mins and shut this game down
