Gareth Bale says he would be open to joining other players in a collective boycott of social media after two of his Wales team-mates; Rabbi Matondo and Ben Cabango were racially abused on Instagram following their victory over Mexico at the weekend.

This comes after Thierry Henry de-activated his social media accounts after describing current levels of racism and bullying on online platforms as “too toxic to ignore”.

  1. Maybe social media needs an identification process when signing up. That and people need to use their real names based on identification. That will limit the trolling just like real life. When people speak as an identifiable person and not something faceless, then they will be forced to behave better.

  2. this could actually work if all footballers stay off of all forms of social media for the foreseeable future it could have a profound effect well done lads you actually figured out how to band together and get something done.

  3. I don't think they get the point of stamping this out a 10% fine isn't good enough you moron you wanna threaten these company's with being shutdown if you really wanna stop this.

  4. Why the fk are you bothered when you earn what you do . Pathetic footballer . Give some of yer money to starving kids u bell end

  5. the issue is that there is no consequences other than a ban on your social media account. it should be prosecutable for being racist online. it would be hard to police but you would definitely see a massive decrease in racist remarks from the attention seeking creeps that make those kinds of comments

  6. It's sad because social media nowhere days don't give a damn about this stuff and it's sad to see. They need to get there eyes peeled and somert about it

  7. maybe its time to come up with a way that one can only register for social media using government identities that can be used by the companies to trace them

  8. Meh. Respect is both ways. You get what you give… If you abuse someone, they are gonna block you out of your lives.. Its the same reason why politicians never give a straight answer. Becuz the media will spin it. Its also the same reason why your children stopped speaking to you….

  9. Salute to Bale
I think having to boycott something to make them change it means their don’t care. Just never use Instagram. The owners are racist. They don’t care. So why should we. Just don’t use it.

  10. If you think boycotting is going to stop online abuse, you’re very uneducated. The only thing that will stop it, will be removing the entire platform.

  11. These keyboard warriors being racist, sexist and rude on social media because they think the can get away with it but are just cowards and dickheads

  12. Can they Boycott there crapy clothing lines stupid advertising campaigns and just stay off TV altogether.. Maybe just consentrate on the football like that's what's as important as they keep telling us it is.. Que the badge kissing and pointing up whilst looking up at the God's as if nobody even scored a goal before…

  13. Sadly every website allowing user comments and pretty well all social media are full of awful posts and comments on hundreds of topics.

Best thing is to avoid the worst ones and really, just back away from reading all the negative comments. That goes for Joe Bloggs or the likes of Gareth Bale. Especially for anyone in the public eye, they are just cannon fodder for hate.

    Sad but true
