Great tournament results in his two tournaments, lost 2/13 since our Euros final loss to Italy on pens. Have we played defensive football? Yes. Is it exciting? No. But I'm sure that most managers say that the important thing is not conceding, then worry about scoring. I'm not bothered by a loss in a glorified friendly when he's blatantly trying new players. Yet people seriously want him out 😅Who do we think we are?
I'd love to see TAA playing as he does for Liverpool, but it won't happen because the rest of the team can't play like Liverpool, and we don't have Van Dijk, we have Maguire.
In Poland it's similar, forever we have better results with Polish managers in charge and each time there's pressure to bring in a foreign manager. From outside looking in, Southgate deserves to manage in Qatar and it's the smartest thing to do. Most importantly he knows the players and the players have no reason to not trust him, he's been very supportive of them. I see it this way players play for England, they're doing it for their glory but also for the glory of all the English fans, the least any fan can do is support them and cheer on them cause even tho style of play is questionable it's still in my opinion England's best chance to win a WC. Almost the whole squad been through tough loses in semis and finals they understand it as well they're close to the ultimate goal. Enjoy the times England fans cause those don't come often. It was Spain time, Germany time, France time it might be England time. Brazil been struggling for so long, Argentina too the only team that beat England was Italy in pens, Italy is not coming to Qatar. You have a big shot at winning it, cherish the moment and good luck
We’re too structured, other nations have evolved and continued to adapt, Southgate is too focused on the previous success
I think it's important to remember that since Southgate took over, our expectations of England have increased massively. He brought a sense of belief that we can win, but we should be careful that belief doesn't become entitlement.
He has brought improvements to the team. Yes there are newer better players, but Southgate was the one picking them, and he's been getting better out of several players than their clubs can. We really should not ignore that.
There is something to be said abour the tactics. I think the team have outgrown them. Now that the team is stronger, both in terms of talent and mentally, they can utilise the benefits of having a top tactician, who will push the team beyond the solid confidence building strategies that Southgate has prioritied. That confidence is important, but they needed that first before they were ready to push themselves.
He's got those players to a point where they can try to keep their heads up after a setback, but we are in danger of losing that if we go too harshly on them. They do deserve to be scolded for losing to Hungary like that, but too many jump to call them terrible, when it's more a case of being bad on day. That will be a problem if it becomes consistant, but it's too early to say.
We should get behind them fully for the world cup and hope for the best, because Southgate isn't going to be changed before then. It's OK to critisise the team, but it has to be balanced with support. Once the tournament is over we can reflect.
I agree – lets leave Southgate in charge for Qatar and we will go out in the group stage and he will quit. then we can start thinking about a more positive appointment.
Nome of your arguments for why he should be the manager are about him, and his specific qualities as a Manager. Also you can critique things without offering a solution. It's fine to admit there are no good options but thay doesn't necessitate that everyone should get on board with him. This is a particularly weak point on international football and the England squad is up there with the best. But Southgate is holding them back from probably ever winning anything
Jackie Charlton came to Ireland during a war first match a banner read fuck of home union jack he won 66 world cup with England he could not be a worse fit for ROI
Southgate grew up within the England set up as a player and was with a lot of these player from unders. If you believe in only english managing england Rice has 3 caps for Ireland he should only play for Ireland
Same problem we have with Portugal. Shitty coach with an amazing squad who lives of off winning the euros that he doesnt even know how he won
Im sorry, but hes the international ole. gets into a good position and bottles it, always picks his favourites, has a love affair with Maguire, who shouldnt be near the squad on his form, plays way too defensive and considering our weakness is our pretty mistake ridden defence its a shock that we're playing to our weaknesses. Including his weird Grealish disrespect and mason mount relationship, playing him for 100 mins in that final was criminal considering he was off it all game. I think its one of those "thanks but its time to go"
First time I’ve categorically disagreed with what you’ve said
Joachim Low made a Final in Euro 2008, quarters in 2010 wc, semis in 2012 Euro. Won WC 2014. Semis Euro 2016. Ko in Group Stages of WC. That was as Defending WC champions. He had credit in the bank at that point and was given another chance and by Euro 2020 he was already out of his depth. Lost to Southgate's England the lesson is learn when to move on a Manager. But you are right it is hard to replace Southgate so I guess he should stay until at least after the WC
English Managers aren't good enough that's just the issue. An English Manager has never won the Prem
The team is being starved of creativity because Southgate's system is so defensive. During the Hungary game Kane was constantly having to drop deep to try and make something happen, by which time our best goalscorer then isn't in the right position. I appreciate what he's done, but it's the waste of talent which worries me.
I find it bizarre the backing he's getting because of his placements in tournaments that HE DIDN'T WIN. I'm Portuguese, we have been calling for Fernando Santos' head for years because of his garbage tactics and setup with our plethora of attacking talent and HE WON TWO TROPHIES. Portugal has a great squad we SHOULD be WC contenders but we know it's not likely with Santos at the helm.
It's international football. You don't get to say "yay we finished top four and get Champion's League football". If you fail at a World Cup you don't get to say "better luck next year". You have wasted four years, you potentially waste a golden generation in many cases after two failures. You do not, and should not have the same amount of leeway as club managers.
hang on, how do you not have more subscribers!!! This sort of content deserves more, love ya vids
I like you Jim, but you’re way off the mark here. You’re saying he’s got credit in the bank for winning nothing, having the most favourable draws of all time, whilst saying we need to change his style of play and that he doesn’t know what his best 11 is and hasn’t figured out how to play a back 4 yet… the bloke has been in charge for 2 major tournaments ffs when will he figure out what his best side is? If you want to settle for mediocrity and waste this team just like Sven did then so be it, but remember you backed him, and thought he deserved to be backed.
I have seen a lot of people, online and off, refer to how fortunate he has been in the games he has played. So let's have a look at how England have fared since the turn of the century, that's as far back as I can actually remember.
Euro 2000 – Out at the group stage. We lost to Romania, who finished 2nd and Portugal who topped the group. We beat Germany, who finished bottom. Tough group? I would've argued so but to some, eaisest Germany team ever and we surely should be hammering Romania. 1 win.
2002 World Cup – Finished second in a group with Sweden, Nigeria and Argentina. We beat Argentina in our only victory in the group stage and finished second. In the R16, we breezed past Denmark but lost 2-1 to Brazil, the team that would go on to win. Disappointing at the time, but in hindsight one of our best outings in the period.
Euro 2004 – Second in the group stage after victories over Switzerland and Croatia. Out in the QFs on penalties to Portugal.
2006 World Cup – Favourable group with Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, and Paraguay. We topped the group after 2 wins and a draw. A narrow win over Ecuador in R16 saw us play Portugal again. And we lost on penalties again.
2008 Euros – Failed to qualify.
2010 World Cup – We were given a favourable group with the US, Slovenia and Algeria. We narrowly beat Slovenia and couldn't manage a win against either the US or Algeria. In the R16, Germany battered us.
Euro 2012 – Topped the group of ourselves, France, Sweden and hosts Ukraine. Drew with France and beat the other two. Out on penalties in the QF to Italy.
2014 World Cup – In a group with Italy, Costa Rica and Uruguay, we didn't win a single game, managing a solitary draw against Costa Rica. Out in the group stage.
2016 Euros – In a group with Wales, Slovakia and Russia, we finished second, managing a narrow win over Wales and failing to beat the other two. Out in the R16 to Iceland.
In 16 years, we failed to get past the QF in any majour tournament and only once did we go out to a team that would go on to win it. From 2002-2010 I would say England had the best squad of my lifetime. Failed to qualify in one of those tournaments. In more recent history, out to Iceland and we crashed out of the 2014 World Cup, in the worst World Cup display I have ever seen. Two of the managers involved in the tournaments above had seriously impressive CVs, Eriksson won the treble with Lazio in a period of incredible competition, while Capello had won multiple titles. Hodgson had managed at international level, taking Switzerland to two tournaments after they hadn't qualified for any prior since 1966, taking Switzerland to the heights of 3rd in the FIFA world rankings. He was England's second worst manager in that time, I'd argue not qualifying was worse, but only marginally. In the aftermath of the Iceland defeat in 2016, we hire Sam Allardyce. He manages just 1 game and leaves after being embroiled in a corruption scandal. Southgate was given the job on an interim basis to lead us through a genuinely difficult spell. He defies all expectations and, poetically, is in charge while we win a game on penalties. We go onto the semi-final of a World Cup for the first time in my life. In the following Euros, we are a penalty shootout away from our first ever Euros, after topping a group with Czechia and Croatia in it, not to mention disposing of old foe Germany in the R16, something we could have only dreamt of in years gone by. While it may be true they aren't what they were, our team isn't what it was either. This Nations League campaign has been an unmitigated disaster but do you know what? I don't care. It's absolutely pointless and there is no utility in it other than experimentation. While there are some fair criticisms, I would have liked to have seen Mitchell in the Nations League and not tried to shoehorn a RB in at LB. As for his conservative style, did people not watch the last world cup? France were dull under Deschamps. And it isn't just them, Portugal under Fernando Santos have faced similar criticisms.
And there's a few things we really should keep in mind going into this next world cup. Our goalkeeper is there essentially by default, he is not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination. Our best centre back isn't great and can't always get into the Man City team. Tomori has played well with AC Milan and I would like to see more of him, but Virgil Van Dijk he is not. And to reiterate, our left-back situation is diabolical. Add all of these things together and I cannot see any justification for obsessing over why we should be playing attacking football. We have a lot of attacking talent and we shouldn't be getting hammered off Hungary. Having said that, just throwing more attackers into a team which clearly isn't all that further back and you leave yourself open.
Sacking Southgate would be sheer stupidity. We would roll the dice for a manager who would need time we cannot give them, likely with no track record of international football but even if they had, it's meaningless as we discovered with Hodgson. If you want to keep raging at Southgate, fine. But it only shows your own delusion and rejection of reality.
I actually don't want alot of current managers to get the England job simply because I dont want them to ruin their careers, the English fanbase is a hard group to please and they feel they should be the best in the world and maybe they should, but that doesn't change that a manager like Potter with what looks like a great path to the top could take that job ruin his career and English fans hate him which then leads to him not getting a top top job after
People can cry about England now, but Argentina had a pretty bad run of form before the 1986 World Cup and look at what they went on to achieve…
England play like how Southgate took that penalty in 96 with complete fear and anxiety
Southgate will be gone after the World Cup. If he does well semi finals or further he will quit knowing he can’t take the nation further. If we have a poor World Cup he will be sacked.
Southgate has done well bringing the team and the fans together however he is now starting to tear it apart by his lack of adventure with the squad. He’s not progressing the style even though we have some of the best attacking players in world football.
Well hey at least you guys don’t have Gregg Berhalter
This video is absolute dogshit 💩
Southgate is one of the worst managers we have ever had, Southgate OUT!
Southgate is average to poor as a manager, it's the players who have got him thus far.
If you are content with a boring, negative, never win anything FA lapdog he's as good as anything you'll find, so you'll be fine.
Southgate's recent public criticism of Rashford and Sancho was shocking in it's naivety. He needs to go.
'it takes time'
It will also take Southgate time to change his turgid style
I trust Arsene Wenger to change the style more than Gareth Southgate who has never won anything.
There is no divine right for England to win something. We have a mix of youth and experience. I have never watched a Nations League game as it's pointless, it's not that important especially when players have played a gruelling season. It's more of a chance (along with friendlies) to give other players a chance and tweak tactics. I don't think GS is changing tactics or tweaking at all. I feel for the fans who pay money to lose miserably. Remember, you can please some of the people some of the time…… I think GS cannot lose if he changes the tactics or tries something different. As far as I'm concerned, I couldn't care less if the friendlies or other games are crap, so long as we deliver during tournaments. I would lovely to win it but there are are better teams out there. As for picking players, whether we have 10 fantastic RB or RWB, I don't care, so long as the one picked is based on reliablity and form. Should we be playing 3 at the back when the Prem League Teams barely play them? Should we play certain players when they've had a poor season? Not really fair on those fighting for a spot for their country.
I think I agree that he has enough credit in the bank. But I do worry we are wasting some serious talent, and might be missing our one opportunity for possibly a long time to win the world cup. Its not just about this game.. we have been stale since after the Euros. I am just not seeing the progress I need to see. Both English football and rugby is in a mess for me. Love the content as always! I think your point is right, in that the FA are going to back him regardless of what we all think.. so better to get on board and see what happens.
You English fans are so bloody short-sighted it's ridiculous. Do you still remember when it literally went from Capello to Hodgson to Big Sam? Not only did you have god-awful football, but it seems everybody has forgotten the kind of players they selected to go to the big competitions. And go look at the support and unity of England as a whole – players, staff and fans – at Russia 2018. That sort of unity was then, unimaginably, replicated at Euro 2021. Now you have two bad performances at a competition that a) nobody cares about, and b) comes at the end of a gruelling season, and everybody is up in arms. Good God, I hope you do sack him and it all goes back to shit again you twats.
Steve cooper can do it and has done it with the under 21s side
Graham potter has the ability and the style
Eddie Howe is proven and would do a better job
We are entering a golden age and need the manager that can play an attacking style that fits our world class and depth in attack. Also his player choices of having his favourites in terms of players Harry Maguire being a more recent example when fik tomori is a far better player in my opinion and him and stones in a back 4 would be far better.
I’m giving him until the World Cup and if the performances don’t change then I believe he should go
I believe that everyone will get behind him for the World Cup because this similar conversation came up before the euros and everyone came behind him for that
Why does the manger have to be English. Only got 2 good English managers with potter and Howe. When I watch England i feel like I’m watching Steve Bruce’s newcastle
It’s insane someone that’s supposedly knows about football has such poor football knowledge.
Calling it a snobbery around him is such an insult to the fans. You can see his abilities every time England play, are you mental?
You just made the case for England mediocrity.
It's just so weird he's playing defense football with quality attacking players.
Gareth allowed us to dare to dream in tournaments from being nowhere for decades so I agree with your completely James. Any disappointing result our fans go after him and it doesn't help the atmosphere to try and build into winning something if he even can do it.
Your up southgqtws arse mate he cost us the world cup
Maybe it’s arrogance and over confidence.
The thing that annoys me about the Southgate in crowd is that if he had the personality of Balotelli they’d all want him out. Just because he’s a nice guy and has had some success in the past isn’t reason to keep him on when he’s failing this team of players.
Valid point that we got to a semi final and a final, but if you looked at both of those tournaments we had fairly easy runs to those games (not totally easy) but in both of those games we played well initially then once we scored we sat back and defended for the rest of the games inviting inevitable pressure that caused us to lose those games and even if we had a defensively strong team (we don't) that would have still been a terrible tatic that you cannot disagree Gareth is directly responsible for. Personally I agree we cannot sack Gareth now (we need a good replacement first) this close to another major tournament, but at the same time saying he should keep his job on credit is short sighted especially when you would have to be a totally inept manager to get nowhere with depth of decent players England has at the moment
Southgate is a horrible tactician. Got very lucky in 2018 and has been riding his luck ever since.
1 dimensional , no imagination
Reasonable and fair? Southgate? He disgraced England with his 2WW Rethorics vs Germany.
Englishman are so resultadists. His performances have been mediocre all along but they love them just bc of results. Everyone else knows England have a world champion potential squad. And Southgate is dragging them. It wasn't because of him, they reached finals staged DESPITE of him.
Now it's too late to switch managers. This world cup is another missed chance, quarters finals just bc the easy run he got (again). But not much more
i agree…. a final in the euros and a semi in the world cup(where nobody expekted something from england, and we might had our weakest team this millenium…) and one england didnt concede goals and looked solid in the euros, and didnt lost a game (expekt the penaltys in the final) for an extreme long streak… also as u mentioned the second most scoring team..as a tournament team i think you need to be defencive and solid…mourinho and benitez has show this alot of times…. it can be a little misstake, or a goal and you are out… the knockout stages is so hard when you up against so many top teams, and thats why its really hard to win CL and world cup and euros…and we usually se a new winner every year and its very hard to predict… its like 5-8 teams that are top teams and can be named as favourites, plus alot of strong outsiders thats hard to beat… if your not sturctured in defence and get a goal against, it can get reallly hard to get back in the game….
and based by england having probably a way weaker team than when we had scholes, beckham, gerrard, lampard, terry, ferdinand, shearer, owen, cole etc.. and lost a final on penaltys and reached one semi final, i find it insane that people complain…he should be a hero….he was a penalty shootout from winning….. thats a 50 50, and if england had won he would be a ledgend…but instad people find a reason to critisise, cus he "used the young people to take penalties that just came on the pitch"…if they scored he would "been a genious"…. he could picked another penalty kicker and they would stilled have missed…. and then he would have been stupid for not using the "best shooters"..and people just forget all rights choices he did..like gettin best out of sterling and kane..puttin in saka, and he did a great job…get grealish in to open up games… (still critisised cuz he didnt start him)…. using kalvin philips instead of bellingham etc… england looked solid and structured…i dont even get what he could done difrent…used an out of shape arnhold at RB? and unexperienced young bellingham at CM? using a RB at left back, cuz shaw isnt good enough? its so easy to critisize after loosing on penalties(you should pickked him, instead of him)…. he probably knew better than anyone who felt most nervous after actually talkin to the players during the match and tournament…. he subbed them in to give them a "feeling" of playing before they shot at least….they could might used shaw that had a "good feeling after scoring" or whatever, but if shaw are bad at penalites and told him, he got a bad feeling, that probably not be a good choice..anyone can miss a penalty anytime…so its so easy to be smart afterwards…and i bet he would be a "genious" for putting on the players that scored" if they did….good video…i like your content…
Couldn't beat an ageing Italian defence, Southgate picks a defence first team and formation, that's how Greece won the euros, dull and now not winning tournaments.
Talking heads love the sound of their own voices. We'll send Italy a postcard from Qatar 🙂 Nice weather this time of year I've heard.
It hasn’t worked if we haven’t won. You can’t waste this squad, I’d prefer a new manager to get the experience and go out early than this be Southgate’s poor swan song.
We haven’t won a tournament for 70 years.
