ON THIS DAY 2019: Newcastle United 1 – 0 Manchester United – Matty Longstaff scores winner on debut

ON THIS DAY 2019:

Due to midfield injuries to Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, and Ki Sung-Yeung, Sean Longstaff was paired with his younger brother Matty, from our youth academy.
Matty made his debut alongside brother Sean at St James’ Park against Manchester United.

Matty gave a MOTM performance, strong, disciplined, and energetic, making 39 (the most) successful passes and 4 interceptions. In the first half, he smashed a shot off the cross bar at the Leazes End from 25 yards out. A sign of things to come in the second half…

After a signature blistering, mazy counter attack run from Allan Saint-Maximin, the ball came to Jetro Willems, who put two Man U players on their arse, before pulling back to Matty at the edge of the area, with Matty drilling a low shot drive from outside the box in to the Gallowgate net.

St James’ Park erupted in ecstasy as a fairytale unfolded before their eyes. Pure emotion and joy as the Geordies watched one of their own experience a moment we all dreamed of as children. United held on to the 1-0 to seal their first home win of the season and Steve Bruce’s first win over Man U in his 20 year managerial career.

Pundits from all over purred over the performance of the two brothers. Even Roy Keane and Gary Neville couldn’t hide their joy for Matty and Sean as they all reminded us, what football at its best can be.

I miss ASM.
