With regards to the soccer market being in a bubble, a lot of assets are in a "bubble" or enjoying very high valuations because there's so much cash in the system, meaning interest rates are very low or negative in a lot of developed markets, US EU Japan, therefore more risky assets like soccer teams, junk bonds, penny stocks, wines, etc. becomes more attractive to people looking for higher yields. Soccer also enjoyed more watch times during the pandemic and that kind of extra exposure helps with valuations, warranted or not.
You also mentioned Barca, deficit spending & debt fueled expansions are nothing new when it comes to businesses or governments. Barca is actually perfectly in position for deficit spending, it has a very large revenue base, it has very valuable players & real estate, it's on a very liquid market, lenders want to lend money in search of higher yields. Once interest rates normalize, the soccer bubble deflates, hopefully slowly.
Soccer economy sounds cool then again any of your videos are good so I don’t really care 🤷♂️
Sorry for the long comment that isn't really related to the video, but this is just a hypothesis I've had and I was wondering what you guys thought about it.
I agree that the body type of stars in popular American sports like american football, baseball and basketball players are different from top soccer players, and I'm not arguing that people like Lebron, Durant etc would be top soccer players if soccer were our top sport. My guess is that tons of guys who maybe played college basketball, and (american) football but were too small to play professionally would be our stars; essentially people we didn't really know. But BECAUSE basketball and american football are our top sports, our most famous athletes are those body types so it SEEMS like our top athletes just wouldn't be great at soccer.
I'll give an example; if basketball and American football or hockey etc were always the top sports in England, their top, and most famous athletes would be athletes in those sports and have those body types. Someone like Phil Foden would probably be unknown in England if basketball were their top sport, because he might try to play basketball and maybe get to a decent level, but never a professional level.
Now you might say, well Phil Foden exists, and therefore he would have risen as a soccer player even in an England where basketball was the top sport. But that is not true. A HUGE thing holding US Soccer back from soccer being say the 4th/5th sport in the US is CULTURE, MUCH MORE than amount of people playing the sport. Because soccer is a relatively new sport in the US in terms of the national consciousness, US Soccer does not understand how to develop soccer players properly. So if soccer only gained popularity when it did in the US (1990s) and still took a back seat to other sports, England likely wouldn't have the soccer culture, infrastructure etc, to develop someone like Phil Foden into a top player. I would contend that there are many American Phil Foden who would have become world class players had they been born and raised in a European country.
Every country understands how to develop players properly in a sport that was always their top sport. If soccer were always the top sport in the US, you'd have professional clubs with academies for over 130 years, you'd have people playing pickup in the street. And once you have a sport ingrained in your culture, you understand what makes a good player. Even the English, who are not as naturally technical as say the Brazilians or Argentines or Spanish, understand that the sport is about creativity and passing. Many American just look at soccer as basketball on a soccer pitch with soccer rules, and thus develop players with simple speed, strength etc to blow by on the wings, cross it in etc. This would not be the case if soccer were always our top sport.
Even if soccer were America's top sport, I am not saying we'd produce flair players at the level of Brazil, but I do think that we would produce the type of players that England and France produce, as they are a similar soccer culture that we'd have if soccer were always our top sport. Not to mention we would have some latin american flair by the fact that we have many Hispanics in the US. The only difference is we'd have like 3x the talent pool of England and France combined.
So the reason I think the US would win say 5 World Cups is what I said about understanding the sport at a fundamental level, eventually becoming a footballing nation like England and France (with a mix of Latin influence), except produce more players because of much bigger talent pool, and because I think we would compete in and thus win a couple of the earlier ones. So if we won 5, but 2-3 were between 1930-1970, and 2-3 were from 1970-2018, I feel like that is quite doable
Usmnt fans and media not as toxic as the English media and fans. Chelsea fans and media are absolutely roasting Pulisic for that Real Madrid lose. Forgetting that he basically saved them last year.
Would love to watch a financial stream
What is Pefok first name?
Gonna put you on ESPN soon…
Props to GGG. His comments are really good.
Waiting for your Iran’s analysis to watch you and your guest thoughts on the group.
Your commentary on this entire topic is annoying and this stream is a waste of time. Who cares about the article???
The Athletic is irrelevant? Why, because you don’t agree?
I don't know the reason for it, but…
Paul Arriola v.2022 is so much better than Paul Arriola v.2021, and I'm glad that that is the case.
I didn't want Arriola v.2021 anywhere near the USMNT, but I love seeing Arriola v.2022 getting spot starts and time as a sub, especially when he is on the field with Ferreira.
But did GGG push back against vertical negativity?
Nobody just blamed Pulisic they (Chelsea) had an overall good match. Regarding your tip for the European Cup, in Europe most teams hate playing Liverpool but you made no reference to Liverpool?
Pulisic had a chance to join Liverpool but refused..I bet he feels sorry for that one. Stop being paranoid about English support blaming American players nobody gives a toss whether they are American or not….calm down and stop trying to wind Americans against the English.
👀
Pulisic with Chelsea on one hand yes very poor looks unfit stiff and no pace left HOWEVER on the other hand I didn't want him to come in and rescue them and get NO credit like last season. So this is the result when he doesn't
As a Chelsea fan living in the Uk, I’m not sure Pulisic is even in the discussion about why we went out to Real Madrid. Poor defending at key moments in the first leg let us down. Having now seen Real Madrid first hand I don’t think Liverpool or Man City have too much to worry about.
If you do an episode on the soccer market, you have to look at some of the better teams that are making money and performing very well, season after season. ie: Napoli
I think a stream on the soccer bubble would be really interesting especially if you had someone on the stream to discuss the topic with you, maybe someone like Manuel Veth
Dude, I love your segment. I appreciate how you render an unbiased opinion and offer the checks and balances approach. Keep it up man.
In one question about the "soccer market" you proved you have no idea, Tac. First, you said the problems are "especially in Europe", when few in MLS make money, most lose badly. Then you referred to Barcelona, proving you don't understand how debt and income are related. Or maybe: do one on the soccer market so we can have a chuckle.
GET THIS MAN TO 100K SUBS
Re: "soccer economy is not sustainable ", yes, please elaborate.
The athletic is garbage news. They had some relevance but following NY times into propaganda news.
Do the bubble show!
There seems to be this notion that only negative comments can be toxic. Honestly, the greatest toxicity from the USMNT fanbase and/or media that I see is toxic positivity. If we can't be honest — even when the truth is unpleasant; if we can't have respectful, honest discourse with a diversity of opinions without labeling each other as 'toxic' or 'conspiracy theorists', then we become part of the propaganda machine, enabling those who try to obfuscate the truth, which will stifle the growth of our soccer culture.
Soccer media in the USA is soft. Who is more criticized, GGG or Frank Vogel? How about GGG or Dave Roberts? GGG or Sean McVay? Each of those coaches have won championships in the NBA, MLB and NFL all of them get more criticism than GGG on his worst day. And we're toxic? Absolutely delusional.
I am in england right now and was brave enough to wear my gio usmnt jersey around london today 😂 Got lots of angry english telling me we don’t stand a chance in qatar. I’m ready for this team to shut them up!
It's very easy to criticize Doyle IN HINDSIGHT. Yup, Gregg's plan worked out. Good on him. But what if Adams gets a yellow (certainly within reason for a CDM that needs to make a tactical foul) and misses the most crucial fixture of that window?
Regarding Chelsea v RM: Kante did not go after a pass to him that led directly to a RM goal. Lack of effort is unacceptable, especially on that stage.
It's an "expectations" thing. We aren't toxic. We are passionate and (with the internet) well informed. We see the talent that is coming up the ranks. And if that talent isn't being utilized properly and we lose to a Costa Rican "C-Team" who in totality make less than any one of our star players (Navas aside)? Or place 3rd in one of the easiest regions in the world to qualify in…finishing behind Canada and a very very weak Mexico team?
Well can you can bet that we will start asking tough questions of the coach and the organization.
Daryl Dike is really needed as a #9. We need a strong dude good in the air in the box and can take shots with both feet. Forget about his tech ability. We need somebody who can put the back to the nets
In general Coaches/managers stubbornly hold onto their player opinions and strategy. Most successful coaches tailor their strategy to the best available player strengths. Greg has shown the ability to learn from his personnel mistakes. In general, with a few debatable decisions, he selected and played the best available players for the last 3 windows. I would like to see more discussion on Greg’s strategy to play complicated positional soccer with inexperienced players versus the traditional American strategy of low block and counterattack that emphasizes athleticism.

Gregg Berhalter is a horrible coach plan and simple. The players are the only thing that has got better.
