In what has been a wild 24-hour news period, Canada men’s national team manager John Herdman had been linked to a switch to the New Zealand football team, before a statement put out by Canada Soccer quashed those reports entirely. Herdman reiterated his commitment to the CanMNT, but new reports out of New Zealand reveal more details surrounding possible negotiations. So… what’s going on here? Andi Petrillo, Gareth Wheeler, Jordan Wilson and Oliver Platt break it all down.

  1. I mean, it'd be a shame if Canada lost him, World Cup collapse be damned since their path there was absolutely glorious. But New Zealand is in a similar position to Canada's at the outset of their WC campaign (never considered the worst in the world, but definitely never one of the best, and not a guarantee for the WC at all – same as, historically, countries like the UAE, Israel, Paraguay, etc.), and if he can get them on the level that he got Canada up to before the WC…well, Canada might have to implement some of that famous big-heartedness and let another country see if he can whip them into shape. (And besides, New Zealand basically is to Australia what Canada is to the USA, right?…please don't kill me).

  2. Don't worry about any links to the English Championship. Herdman's resume of coaching NZ Women, Canada Women and Canadian Men doesn't scream "hire me" to an English Championship team. Hiring him would be met with outrage by any Championship or League 1 team. Those links are probably the work of his agent trying to get him a new deal.

  3. John Herdman coached my 10 year young boy back at the start of the millennium in Invercargill, New Zealand in a young development squad. He then was very impressive to watch and he has done amazing things for our country. I've met John Herdman in those early years of his career and have been to one of his motivational speeches/presentations. I then always had the feeling that he loved New Zealand – He, back then, was very committed and intelligent, and he made very sound decisions.

He's also done a lot of amazing things for the NZ Women's squad.

Of course I would have loved it if John Herdman decided to come back to New Zealand. New Zealand needs a good coach like John, especially at a time when NZ soccer is in a little bit of a disarray and also underfunded. My genuine feeling is that if NZ soccer/football was better paid, chances of him wanting to coach again here would have been somewhat elevated, even if not right now.

But what Canada have achieved lately and where Canada is heading it all seems to make sense to ride the wave until some sort of completion was achieved.
Yes, NZ needs a John Herdman and I don't believe that NZ would be as low achieving as it is at the moment if someone with brains would have a good look at what talent we have here in the country.

What NZ now needs in my humble opinion is someone who can coordinate soccer/football and appointed someone who can select the players a NZ squad needs, then develop those players, so they are ready for the bigger competition.

John Herdman also has the know-how what regards what a good player development program should look like.

John's greatest power however in my opinion is player motivation and unification. Canada playing on the big stage looked unbeatable that is until they went against the big ones, such as Croatia and Belgium.

And like in any match, it is often just one split second that can turn a game around, one moment of inattention or bad luck.

No, Canada played extremely well in the last World Cup and it was those freaky moments that changed it all for Canada in favour of the competing nations.

What about the interview with the NZ Soccer Federation. I think you will find that John Herdman just wanted to get his feelers out there to learn how keen other clubs or nations currently are to grab him, but I don't think he was ever really serious in leaving Canada before the next World Cup played on their own turf along with the USA.

It's simply because here is another guaranteed opportunity to live the football on its biggest stage.

No coach would want to miss this GRAND opportunity, even if NZ so needs someone like Herdman. What frustrated me while listening to this chat was however how weak New Zealand is regarded as a football nation by other nations. Our players aren't actually that bad! NZ only missed qualifying for the last World Cup by the narrowest of margins.

But back to Canada Mens team – Go Canada.

I live in New Zealand, I am a New Zealander, but my soccer heart is in Canada. Why? Because I've seen what a person like John Herdman can do, by always following his gut feeling and taking the most sensible action at the time.

Canada was his gut feeling when he left New Zealand, and it will stay like that – I'm certain of that – until after the next World Cup at least. What I found surprising though is that during all of the successes enjoyed by John Herdman there was nothing here on National TV about him, as far as I can tell. I just found out by coincidence while streaming YouTube content, and since I learned what John Herdman was up to in recent years I was hooked.

  4. If they offered him more money I don't see why it would be such an impossibility. Working for Canada Soccer is like working for a crazy uncle. Also people may be over-estimating his current options.

  5. What you’re not considering is that New Zealand is basically guaranteed to be in the World Cup in its expanded edition going forward. They don’t have any competition in the OFC. So they are guaranteed three games every four years in the WC. Maybe that’s an appealing challenge.

  6. You’re also forgetting the whole boycott of a friendly by the team executed in a kind of bratty way, and the big fiasco with the Iran friendly. He was probably not a happy puppy during those controversies.

  7. Oh jeeeeez. As a longtime USMNT fan, you have no idea what you are talking about. Gregg Berhalter is a non-sentient lifeform with zero accomplishments in his limited coaching resume who was hired by his brother the CCO of the USSF at the time. Sheer nepotism, which he proved by being the first USMNT coach to LOSE TO CANADA in 36 years. Berhalter had what is easily the most talented pool of American soccer players ever in its history and chose to continuously select terribly mediocre MLS Lifers to the team instead, bringing NINE utterly useless MLS Lifers to the World Cup roster. With this terrific player pool at his disposal, his poor player selections, awful tactics, and even worse man management resulted in the USMNT finishing THIRD in CONCACAF qualifying for the World Cup. Actually, Berhalter managed to finish tied with Costa Rica for FOURTH on points, getting third only on goal difference.
Yeah, previous less talented USMNT teams used to finish FIRST in CONCACAF, and they did much better at the World Cup also.
Berhalter then finished his term as coach in a mud wrestling match with the most talented player in his roster – Gio Reyna – and his parents, both former National Team soccer players for the US.
So, yes, if you polled true diehard USMNT fans (not the noobs who were born yesterday and think MLS soccer is great), yeah, we are GLAD THAT BERHALTER IS GONE, AS WELL AS THE OLD BOYS CLUB THAT HIRED HIM. They all deserved to be let go.
Almost anybody else would have been a better coach than Berhalter

  8. John Herdman and the CPL have put us in a position where we could attract very interesting quality for the job, the problem is Canada soccer corruption.

I do think anyone familiar with world soccer would see Canada's nat team as a really interesting job.

  9. He walks by me and says your new Zealand. My response you know how two large and two small show up to protect the, Madrid agreement, guy who details the justification to be off the ship with his assistant? That doesn't make you the Sydney Accord ahead of me.

  10. What they aren't getting is a medical supply ship for example … When the lines are dirty it is from our healthy and mechanically correct lines. When we get them near healthy at the expense of our wellness, they dismantle it. Yeah… Shhhhit. So we had to do away with the greeting at thee port by two large and two small.

  11. Canada was already playing great when Octavio Zambrano was the manager ! Herdman inherited a very good team ! I predicted Canada would qualify if they were given a chance after Covid stopped international matches for a while and it was debated if Canada could join the traditional hex ! Herdman pissed me off with his unsportsmanship trash talk of Croatia ! As well as Borjan s negative talk of Croatia 6 months before ! I also pulled my support of Canada since they didn’t allow unvaccinated fans in Hamilton and Edmonton ! That’s why I was happy Croatia tore them apart !
