Tottenham Hotspur have won the race for West Ham United for midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Spurs have made the highest offer to West Ham — believed to be worth a £85million (€98m, $112m) guaranteed fee according to sources — and the 21-year-old has decided to join them.

The Portugal international has attracted interest from multiple clubs, including Manchester United, but is now set to move to north London after West Ham stood firm on their valuation.

For United, the transfer fee and the player’s salary went higher than they were willing to pay, and they will now shift their focus to other targets.

  1. Good fee. Doubled what we paid. Good business. Really goo player. I wonder if there’s any sell on.

Shame he’s going to spurs, but I’m so surprised they paid the £85m, we need to reinvest it very very wisely.

  3. Should get a buy back clause for when you get promoted and Spurs go down at the end of next season!

  4. Don’t even care that it’s Tottenham with a fee like that. Great business to sell that high. Expected 60-65 at the start of the summer

  5. Highest ever transfer fee received in championship is £62m to Southampton for Lavia, we just smashed it by £20m

  6. Personally I am not bothered about him going to Spurs especially since we went down, I was hoping we’d maximize his price and that we did

  7. I don’t even care about him going to tottenham because 85 mil for a player that didn’t make portugals world cup squad + got relegated back to back is incredible business

  8. Huge ceiling ahead of him, shame he’s gone to spurs but glad we stayed firm and got the asking price we wanted for him. Man united fans thought they could get him for half that and was bragging about it.

I wanna find all those people saying we wouldn’t get £85 million for him

For that much money I’m not mad, although it’s gonna be hard to support Fernandes when he plays for spurs in future

  11. All those entitled Man Utd fans who demanded we sell him on their terms can’t be too happy with this

Fuck fuck fuck. Anyone but these cunts !!! Although I’ll take the cash and with any luck we don’t lose many more but still !!!!! It’s a kick in the bollocks when you sell to these arseholes. That prick Ohara will be giving it the big 1

  13. Unsurprising. He’s quality, could probably do better than a third relegation battle in three years though

  14. £85m for a player from a relegated team is absolutely insane business.

Fernandes is a cracking player, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve played a blinder here and we should be getting this over the line as soon as possible.

Amazed that we actually got that fee, Southampton had a 15% sell on clause so roughly 6.5 million out of the profit made but still good business

  16. This article seems to avoid actually saying the deal is done. The language leaves room for some other team to match the bid

Don’t care which club he signs for if the deal is right. And £85m guaranteed is right at the top end of his value as of now, IMO. Has further potential and if he fulfils it, he’ll soon move on again. A sell-on clause would be nice, but we’ll see.

I feel vindicated arguing with Man U fans saying well absolutely hold out for £85M while they were saying we’d sell for £50-60M range. What an utterly absurd fee.

  19. I can’t believe after being linked to Real, PSG & manure he’s ended up there. I’ve egg on my face with this one

  20. Damn fair enough. I guess that’s player 1 of 2 needed to stabilise the finances. Summerville next. I do wonder if Bowen will stay

I’ll give him 3 months into the season before he does his ACL on their concrete pitch
