**From the article:**
Andoni Iraola has been ruled out of contention for the Manchester United job as Michael Carrick edges closer to being confirmed as head coach.
Although United insist no decision has been made, **all the signs point to Carrick and an announcement could be made before the end of the season.**
**Confidential understands the 43-year-old is no longer under consideration, leaving him free to discuss the managerial vacancies at Crystal Palace and Chelsea.**
**It looks as though Carrick has done enough to stay in charge** after guiding United back into the Champions League. **The 44-year-old is set to be rewarded with a new contract along with his backroom staff of Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion.**
It would make sense for the club to clarify the situation before the players leave for the summer after the final game at Brighton a week on Sunday. The squad are known to have been talking amongst themselves about who might get the job if Carrick doesn’t. It also promises to be a busy transfer window for United, and potential targets will want to know who will be in charge at Old Trafford next season.
The club have been determined to take their time and follow a thorough process that has involved talking to a number of candidates.

Wheeler putting Alkmaar’s Kees Smit in the same bracket of £80m players alongside Anderson, Tonali, Tchouameni and Baleba/Wharton. I’m not going to pretend I know Eredivise-ball, is he that good?

Good. Sorting the manager situation early means we can finally focus on transfers and stop City from signing everyone .

If we appoint Carrick, I hope he has something better than what we have seen planned for the team; else it is going to be a long season.

This is a transfer season in which the investment in the squad is much more important than replacing the manager, imo. I have my doubts that Carrick will be replicating this success next year with UCL football mixed in, but a bolstered squad will give him the best chance.

I’ve been saying it since the Liverpool game, if it’s going to be Carrick we might as well get it announced asap to give us some stability heading into the transfer window. We need to get a couple of deals over the line before the World Cup. We’re usually so slow and tentative in the summers of big tournaments, we need to hit the ground running next year.

If we were able to get Kennet Eichhorn ahead of City it would be massive in my opinion.
Huge DM talent, already a starter for Hertha at 16. Already tall and strong as well.

M.Fernandes and Alex Scott in the 40m bracket?
Highly doubt but would be impressed if they got either in that price range

Smit would be a lovely 3rd or 4th option if the 1st and 2nd are top class

Would add both Ayyoub Bouaddi and Nathan De Cat to the “young player” category we should be after. Bouaddi would be closer to the 40M category though

I must be imagining things i thought I read that Iraola was only open to going to Bilbao. He’d be a great appointment for any team.

When they said that a German youngster was going to city I almost fainted, thought those bastards were getting Ajaiy.

I really hope Carrick surprises me but I just cant picture him being a disciplinarian if needed, also worried about how we manages the squad. Somehow and someway we have scraped through games but it concerns me that our best 2 performances of his tenure were his first two games and since then we have been declining. Amad and mbuemo form has dropped off a cliff. Worried about how he manages squad players.
Other concerns are over when we lose Casemiro, does Carrick have the experience to figure things out. If we have 2 or 3 bad results he is going to be criticised for the lack of experience and we saw it with Ole, when the players stop believing with inexperienced coaches, they stop believing quick

I love Tyler Adams as much as the next Yank, but there is no way he’s a 40M player. He’s too limited for this United side, and he’s too injury prone.

I knew it would be like this buy im just so disappointed. What iraola is doing with bournemouth is insane, and his style of football is much more fun.

I’d very much like Iraola, but can understand what Carricks done result wise is pretty good

Iraola ruled out, why?

Genuine question, why is the club not trying to get Alonso? If Chelsea are in talks, why shouldn’t United as well?

Interesting note about the backroom staff. I love Holland and don’t know what the others contribute but would like some other tactical coaches in there with them.

The article is behind a paywall.
Does it mention a reason behind why the club has stepped away from Iraola?

I really think hiring Carrick is a poor decision. Other than Arsenal and City in the first two games we have performed from mediocre to crap despite only playing once a week. Other than getting rid of Amorim’s diabolical system I don’t see what new ideas, tactics, patterns of play ect. Carrick has brought. Have done this before with Ole. Can’t see it not ending the same.

I’m fine with Carrick being permanent manager. I’m not particularly excited but we need someone safe and stable until we have built a squad that can compete.
Late era Ole, Ten Hag and Amorim all highlighted the same issue: poor recruitment and no control in midfield. We can go out and find the manager who is going to get us back to the top and winning titles once we have sorted out the squad.

Hopefully they can’t afford Anderson after that. But who am I kidding.

Iraola is linked to Crystal Palace? My comment from awhile ago might become true…

That £80m, £40m, £20m plan seems way too rigid.
No way I would want to pay that much for Baleba, and I’d want a safer second option in case his form doesn’t turn around quickly. Similarly I thought Wharton had been reported elsewhere as ruled out because he wasn’t a good fit with Kobbie.
They are going to have to box clever on that £20m option because there won’t be many options that can contribute at that price range, and it will be tough keeping the price down when United’s name is mentioned.

Carrick aint the guy unfortunately. I’ve supported this club for nearly 35 years and feel we’ll be looking for a new manager again next summer.
