Brian Kilcline and Barry Venison collected the trophy before kick-off and the Magpies then proceeded to christen their new Asics shirts with six goals in front of the Gallowgate End.
A seventh followed after the break as Andy Cole continued his hat trick and the whole ground rocked to the strains of the “gets the ball, scores a goal” song for some time.
Rather less tuneful was Sir John Hall’s post -match rendition of “We are the Champions” caught by TV microphones.
Also on hand to join in the celebrations were local band Lindisfarne, who performed from a lofty perch above the Leazes End as the new Sir John Hall Stand began to take shape. (nufc.com)
