I love the mental gymnastics that are done every time we have a decision go against us incorrectly.
It shouldn’t have stood. It goes in the off the hand and they knew it.

I knew as soon as I saw him touch it that they were still going to give it. Same shit every week.

I have no issue with the goal being allowed.
I have an issue with the explanation. There was “no clear evidence of it touching his hand”.
If the goal was ruled out, it would be diabolical to the game. But you cannot look at that and say there is no conclusive evidence that it touches his hand. The ball changes movement and his fingers react to the impact.
Again, it would be criminal if the goal was disallowed from a football point of view, but the explanation makes no sense and can be added to the neverending list of ambiguities of the handball rules.

“in law a handball has to be deliberate”
Since when?!! There would be almost no handballs given if this were really the case.
petethepool on
I watched all the replays they showed at the time and I was convinced it didn’t hit his hand, so I have no problem with the decision personally. Indeed for once I also agree with his logic to say ‘if it isn’t conclusive after 2 minutes of review and viewing it from a bunch of different angles, onfield decision should stand’. I hate when they spend 5 minutes pouring over every pixel of footage for a goal, feels like they’re actively looking for reasons to disallow it rather than simply highlighting any kind of clear infringement.

If the Diaz ghost goal happened now under Slot this sub would be saying ‘get over it, we’d have dropped points anyway’. What happened to rallying around the team in tough times?
MindlessMoss on
I mean is what he saying wrong. All the angles in the immediate aftermath of thr goal were inconclusive. I could not tell if it touched him at all. Sure the balls direction goes towards goal but that could have been spin on the ball.
Only 10 to 15 later did they show another replay on TV of a zoomed in angle where we see his fingers react to contact.
Was the game supposed to be delayed for 15 minutes till all video was available?
The issue is the technology in this case and not the refs or VAR being inconsistent
roofilopolis on
Why is it taking 23 minutes for us to see a replay from the camera that clearly had the best angle? It doesn’t take that long to zoom in.
It seems like they just decided not to use that camera replay…
Britz10 on
I don’t understand what the problem is here? The ref didn’t see the ball go off Sesko’s hand, he’s not really in any sort of position to make that call, that has to go to VAR, that’s where they messed up, it shouldn’t take 22 minutes to get a conclusive angle.
stephenjwz on
twenty two minutes later, were it the refs doing it, would be a reflection on the technical ability of the VARs to do their job in a timely fashion. in actuality we’re saying it took 22 minutes for the TV channel to edit up a short video that tells the story, have it ready to go live, and fit it into the coverage at a suitable moment, which isn’t the same as saying it takes 22 minutes to see an angle/zoom.
if there are too many angles to look at (i gather 3 replay operators per game are used), hire more people. if the people you’ve got are too slow to check the things you need to check, hire more suitable people. if it’s the tech or the software that can’t do what you need it to kick off about it and acquire or develop something better.
to be fair to Gallagher specifically if you’re quoting him years apart, the laws may change (like zero handball tolerance changed in 2019 & 2021 i think) as well as the exact implementation of VAR.
SocratesDaSophist on
I think the law was different in 2017 or was it changed by then? I remember Mane’s goal against United was disallowed for an accidental handball, but I don’t remember what year was that.
Consistent-Shoe-9602 on
The PGMOL are a disgrace. The referees in England are nowhere near the level of the football that is being played in England and that is an absolute shame. And we keep getting blatantly wrong decisions against us year after year. Maybe it’s high time for a proper lawsuit. Players, managers and staff constantly face consequences for their bad decisions on the pitch or touchline, but the same cannot be said about the referees.
Our team’s performance might have been terrible, but that’s no excuse for the PGMOL and their bias, incompetence and/or corruption (whichever is actually the case).

A handball does not have to be deliberate. That is factually incorrect.

You’ve missed the context that the hand ball rule changed in the interim period to make any hand ball contact by the scorer illegal. In 2017 it was subjective
Standard-Still-8128 on
I think more of a problem is that VAR doesn’t use all the tools available, millions of pounds at stake per game an a TV company can use a zoom facility but VAR can’t is crazy, personally don’t think goals like that should be disallowed there’s nothing he could do to get out of the way an didn’t move to the ball but rules are rules an need to followed or what’s next
Efficient_Shop_9352 on
The reality is it does touch his hand and it goes in directly off the handball. I of course see the touch is minimal and may not affect the flight of the ball, but the rule isnt written that way. The rule is of course a bit silly here – in an ideal world i don’t want to see minimal interventions like that disallow goals and I’d want the goal the other way. So there’s a conversation to be had about whether the law is right or wrong.
BUT. This is one of the few occasions in the game where the law is completely objective. There are barely any other handballs in the game (think of a touch off a thigh in the box) which are objective but this rule is. If it goes into the goal off a hand, no goal. You’re even allowed to non deliberately handle it then assist a goal. Just not this.
That goal should never have stood and the 22 minute argument is absurd given VAR clearly knew enough to think there MAY be a handball within 15 seconds of the goal going in. I dont know about others, but it did look wrong to me on the third replay. The way this has been reacted to is so sad. Every single football fan should want rules in the game. Every single football fan thinks some rules are ridiculous but they all complain far more when they are inconsistently applied. Why did player A get away with this last week? Oh, it’s okay when it’s Arsenal? Etc.
I want referees to agree on rules before the season. Then, I want no mid season changes. The second you change something and team B benefits or loses from it, you’ve deliberately introduced an inconsistency and lowered the integrity of the game, which depends on enforcement being fair. If they make 2 opposite decisions for the same thing, one of them must be wrong and an official acknowledgment and apology must be observed. Enough of refs taking big games and applying a completely different standard, or letting x go one week and punishing it the next. They do it in the name of “not ruining the game”, but all I see is wilful corruption. How else should we describe double standards depending on who’s playing?
No-Cow-4262 on
You could see both the bath changing its path slightly as well as his finger move back after touching the ball in the original video. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Was clear as day from a physics stand point in the original video

Honestly who gives a fuck? We’re shite and would’ve lost anyway. Yes it was handball but maybe we should focus on the disgusting performances over the past 18 months and not the refs.
