This would be my Newcastle United lineup for the rest of the season.

GK – Aaron Ramsdale – Nick Pope showed again vs Arsenal that he is unreliable as a Sweeper and ball player. Aaron Ramsdale is better on the ball and has better distribution which will be much needed especially against Brighton's high press

RB – Lewis Miley – Shown on many occasions this season that he is comfortable covering at RB and with Livramento's Injury and Trippier's age and lack of sharpness, Miley's versatility will be much required to end the season

RCB – Malick Thiaw – With Schars injury, he is our only natural right footed CB. Even though he's had some poor performances at times, he's still been quality and needs to form that connection with Botman

LCB – Sven Botman – On his day he is top quality and is a colossus. He needs to rediscover that form and build that connection with Thiaw

LB – Lewis Hall – One of our best players this season and I have no idea why he was benched vs Arsenal. He's our only natural LB so has to play for the rest of the season

RCM – Bruno Guimaraes – Captain, leader, legend. He's the heartbeat of our team and another contender for our POTS. Our performances seem to be better when he's in the side

LCM – Sandro Tonali – One of our most creative players and an engine. May possibly be playing for a move away so should be looking to perform

RW – Anthony Elanga – He may not have performed well this season but he's shown in certain games what he's capable of and think he needs a run in the team to build his confidence and start firing

LW – Harvey Barnes – With Gordon's injury and potential exit we need Barnes to step up and perform at the level we know he can, especially if he's going to be our starting LW next season

CF – Nick Woltemade – Looked very good when he came on vs Arsenal and I think he should continue in that role just behind the striker where he has use his strengths of his technical ability and hold up play

ST – Yoane Wissa – Similar scenario to Elanga where obviously he hasn't been good this season but hasn't been given a consistent run in the side. I think with a consistent run he could potentially find and bit of form for an inflated sale or to be our ST next season

This team just doesn’t excite me anymore. It’s just the same old slop every match. Of course I’ll support them but we are just going into games sleepwalking half the time

Don’t think you’ll find many people in this sub who will disagree too much with that lineup.

My only concern is that Brighton are typically adept at playing around our press *when we’re good at it*. The formation change would also need a different tactical outlook or we’ll be torn to shreds. Just putting players in a slightly tweaked lineup isn’t going to make much difference.

On paper it looks like a squad easily getting Europe but they’re a hard watch whenever they take the pitch

the problem with our team is our manager is shoving squares into a circle hole. Howe recruits players that he can’t even play in his formations, and hes insistant on playing players out of position. I also feel like he gives certain players too much power – what has Anthony Gordon done at all to warrant giving him starting LW over Harvey Barnes? Dan Burn looks terrible in LB, but hes religiously allocating constant minutes this season and says “he’s never done us wrong in this position” despite never actually having a good game this season in that position (can’t speak for other seasons where he has actually done well). Pope never should’ve started over ramsdale last game, albeit he did have a good(ish)game. Osula starting over Woltemade in striker position doesn’t make any sense when Osula has had much better performances in the RW.

Anthony Gordon had a total of maybe 7 good games this season (being very generous) – most of them were champions league games. Barnes had much better EPL showings with less time. We have good players, we’re just not making the most of them, and its exhausting because most people have been complaining about this season long.

Any team that is playing our best young player out of position and our best striker out of position isn’t worth looking at for me.

  6. I think this is nearly spot on for what we should be trying. I’d still like to see Osula on the right in this formation/system and I think Ramsey on the left in a more floating Morgan Rodgers type role would really suit him as well.

No chance we do this though. It’ll be 433 the same team as Arsenal with Osula up top and Murphy on the right because last week was an ‘improved’ performance…

  7. For me I want to see Osula right wing, Woltemade as the centre forward dropping deep with Osula and Barnes running beyond him towards goal. He will create chances for those two. I don’t think it’s worth persevering with Wissa if we’re planning to offload him. I think we sort of have to keep trying with Elanga but I think it should be from the bench at the moment.

If I was to go with your formation then it would just be a swap of Osula for Wissa – he’s earned it more, works harder, more likely to be at the club next season.

  8. I’d love to see this line-up for the final 4 games regardless of score. Give them a chance to play together. I dont wanna see Burn, Murphy, Osula or Gordon (if he wants to leave).
