Gyokeres was not good yesterday but thats not a surprise. I thought Ødegaard also had a mediocre performance yesterday. He lost a few duels and killed an attack early on where he could have sent Havertz through, but he held onto the ball for too long and the attack stalled. And for a player that is known for his technique and “silky touch”, he over and underhits passes a lot. Could have sent Madueke in behind at one point but he overhit the pass and Madueke had to run out wide to collect. Ødegaard leads the press well though

  2. Look how far we’ve fallen on a technical perspective when we are all gassing up that MLS pass to Saka.

Imagine listening to all that waffle Ateta has been spouting for weeks

So we needed a BIG response after the ridiculous bottle-job he has been masterminding.

He comes out and says the exact same nonsense, yet again, during the lead up to the game – only for the side to go on and be outplayed (more shots, possession and clearly better xG) at home by a Newcastle side that had lost 8 of their last 11 games.

We played the same garbage football that has lead to this capitulation. Nothing changed. No inspiration. That’s the response they gave.

  4. CoverEyesInHorror on

I like how for some people it matters that we had lower xG than Newcastle but not that we should have beaten Bournemouth and City by that metric. Anything to cling on to a narrative. No consistency in the reasoning.

By the way, when was the last time white actually received the ball on an overlapping run?

  6. south_west_trains on

There was a point yesterday where we had 29% possession.

Utterly horrendous spectacle yesterday. I found it so dull to watch I joined my partner who was watching Midsomer Murders.

This football we play is utterly revolting.

We can call this City team cheats all day and they are, but their players are on a entirely different level to ours in terms of mentality.

Last season was a disaster by their standards and now they are back to winning a minimum of 2 trophies and potentially a domestic treble. They always replace their players when they reach a level like Jesus, Zinchenko, Sterling, etc or reach a certain age like Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Aguero etc and their replacements adapt straight away.

Meanwhile we are still waiting for our Partey and Xhaka replacement and still haven’t replaced Auba after 6 years, and are hoping the likes of Havertz, Odegaard, Martinelli etc will come good every season.

Obviously wanted more going into it but after the performance I’ll take the 3 points any day.

How do we think MLS did in midfield?

  9. Aggravating_Pizza592 on

Although our players are tired there is no way we rotate for a CL semi final. It would be ridiculous to get this far and start resting players . The only ones who shouldn’t start are the likes of Saka and Eze who clearly aren’t fully fit. Otherwise Zubi , Rice , Odegaard have to start

  10. MajorAfternoon109 on

Whoever thinks Newcastle is some cakewalk must’ve started supporting the club this year. They’ve been one of our harder fixtures for several years now.

  11. There’s something very wrong with our football and set-up currently. Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle, they all win almost all 2nd balls in midfield, our players are never near them. We never played great fluent attacking football this season but atleast we won duels, won 2nd balls and pressed high. Now we just give the ball to the opponent and hope they don’t score

  12. One-Inflation-4117 on

Ridiculous performance from Saliba yesterday, his reading of the game is seriously under- appreciated.

  13. UnquenchedMammoth356 on

God the amount people gaslighting themselves into thinking that everything is fine and coddling the players and the manager as if they were toddlers dven though they are watching the actual football is incredible. I am not inherently negative about most things and appreciate what Mikel and the others have done for us in the past 6 years, but when something is clearly wrong, why is it so hard to accept the truth, especially when it’s so blatant so see? I want us to see us pull through and win it. It would be a beautiful story. But the display over the past few months doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in me.

  14. I’ve been so impressed with Eze lately. He plays with zero fear, is willing to make risky passes and dribbles and is one of our only “xG cheats” who can create a goal out of nothing. The most impressive thing about his form is that he’s managed to go up a level during the most important part of the season and when the rest of the squad is playing like absolute shit. Elite mentality

  15. It’s hard not to look at the £100m+ we spent on Noni and Gyokeres and wonder who we could’ve spent that money on instead. I’m grateful for Gyokeres and his availability this season, but my word, is he difficult to watch. And Noni…I hope he can come good. He’s got the raw ingredients. But the intelligence is so lacking atm.

  16. Our team’s inability to score more than one goal in a game means that if we concede a single goal in the league we’ve essentially lost the title.

  17. Aggravating_Pizza592 on

80m for Gibbs White will solve a lot of our problems . Forest even using him off the left now , he could do a lot for us. Impact of Eze is obvious the last few weeks . We could do with another player who is good in tight spaces and can score out out of nothing

  18. Seeing our players basically collapse after the game makes for a nice “Passion” image, but isnt it worrying to people? Our players looking like that after a game at home to a Newcastle team that had lost the previous 3 games in the league. Zubimendi could barely stand before being taken off, losing duels left right and center.

  19. The Gyö pass reaction is so embarrassing. He fucked up the pass, Big whup. Every game a player misses a sitter. Why are we always doing this to ourselves and our players?

  20. UnquenchedMammoth356 on

At the start of the season Zubimendi was looking fantastic. He just wasn’t rotated enough and he clearly suffers from fatigue. He was winning duels left and right, but now he is letting the play go past him very often. Either trust norgaard more at the start of the season or just accept that he’s going to be wank towards the end of the season because of his fitness. Won’t get a chance to be rested until the end of the season but next season he reallt needs someone who will alllow him to take a breather.

This Gyokeres bashing is tbh mildly infuriating. Is it Gyokeres fault that Pope didn’t get a red card, Rice not shooting it first time, Martinelli not passing it through for Odegaard when Gyo ran like an animal and won the ball or Odegaard not passing the ball at the right moment for either Gyo or Havertz. Even the ball through for the Pope situation was overhit like hell.

Havertz is not something elite either. He gives you good positioning, ok technical abilities, horrendous finishing and low intensity in the press. Very injury-prone.

Gyokeres gives you good runs, ok positioning, below the standard technical abilities, elite finishing and high intensity in the press. Also he is available very often and takes care of his body.

I think he should have hit that pass on the second touch, when he did not it became much harder. Good defensive positioning from the defender, and probably a bit of tired legs at the end made it a bad pass, but it is not the easiest pass either with your weak-foot in 94th minute of an intense open ending.

I would say the Martinelli one and Rice are bigger mistakes in terms of context. Rice should shoot it, if you miss you atleast restart the play, but when he kept the ball we risked a chance on the other side in transition. They even got a corner from the same play. Stupid play from our “future captain”. Martinelli one is soo bad. I won’t even talk about it. His right foot, not gassed at all, he just has to make an okay pass between two Newcastle players that had 10 metres between them. Horrible…. Lately I feel like he is playing against the team and not either the team. City’s 2-1 goal is totally his fault. Bad positioning when inbetween the fullback and centerback, giving O’Reilly tons of space.

  22. If it was Kai Havertz missing that pass, this sub would be on a melt down.

Look at some, blame other players because Gyökeres bad play. Had it be Havertz, they would call him a fucking donkey. The double standard is pretty hilarious I would say.

  23. Casual-Capybara on

I think we’ll be nowhere near a title race next season if we don’t overhaul our squad quite a bit. We can keep waiting for constantly injured players to magically return to their level but that’s a path that will only bring misery.

Jesus, Odegaard, White, and it pains me to say it, Havertz are on high wages and have been of limited use for most of the past two seasons. Add onto that some mediocre transfer decisions in Gyokeres and Madueke, and it’s a large amount of wages that’s being wasted.

Now the issue is that it will be exceedingly difficult to move some of these players on, given that nobody else will give them anywhere near what we give them, and that they’re attached to this club, which is a good thing. We also probably won’t be able and willing to have a crazy summer like last one.

Let’s hope our talent ID is better this summer, because if we keep squandering our transfers and wages on players like Gyokeres we’re going to decline steadily.

man i’ve watched timber go down in the 40th minute, play till half time, continue in the second half then go down in the 50th again all while tearing his ACL

Kai and Eze could’ve been doing backflips after the game and i won’t trust it until I see them on a pitch again

  25. Every now and then I see someone say signing Hincapie was a waste of money and I’m just like bruh are we watching the same sport

  26. Ok i understand Gyokeres is not upto it, but got a feeling he is gonna score in CL final, and it will be funny to see the reactions here

Yes I am toxic positivity merchant and deluded

  27. DefactoOverlord on

Who’s the last player we could confidently say was improved by Arteta’s coaching? Most players we acquire seem to perform as expected or worse.

  28. ILoatheHessianMatrix on

That pass from Gyokeres is genuinely Sunday league level. I understand he’s more a last play bagsman which he is really good at in the right set up, but you just have to make that pass. Never was the right signing in my book but will continue to back him if I can.

That’s got to be better though. Will give credit for the red he should’ve won, but we all know this is fucking poor.
