Unlike Trump, the Italians actually have enough self-awareness and respect to others.

  2. >The Italian sports minister, Andrea Abodi, has described a proposal for his country to replace Iran at the [World Cup](https://www.theguardian.com/football/world-cup-football) as “not appropriate”, rejecting any idea that the *Azzurri* will be granted a last-minute berth at this summer’s tournament.

    >On Wednesday it emerged that Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy to Donald Trump, had [suggested Italy should be fast-tracked](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/apr/22/trump-envoy-seeks-to-replace-iran-with-italy-at-world-cup-says-report) to the World Cup despite their [shock defeat](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/mar/31/bosnia-herzegovina-italy-world-cup-2026-qualifying-playoff-match-report) by Bosnia and Herzegovina in last month’s playoffs. Zampolli proposed the four-time winners Italy replace Iran and said they would “have the pedigree to justify their inclusion”. But Abodi said football’s showpiece tournament should remain meritocratic.

  3. Although I hoped Italy would qualify, I hope they won’t get a spot for the World Cup. The shame would be much bigger, and I have a feeling they would make another blunder if they replace Iran. They need to rebuild.

  4. Why would Italy ever do that? Not only would they need to have a lack of respect, but it’d be utterly embarrassing in history for future generations. I don’t think anyone besides Israel would jump at this chance (which I fully expect them to try at this point.)

Also, why choose an EU country over one who plays in the same qualifications as Iran? At least that would somehow sound more reasonable. I heard their reasoning for Italy and it’s just so dumb for trying to make Italy like some royal spoiled brat. I’m glad Italy shut it down fast at least. This world cup is going to be a world cup of all time for all the wrong reasons.

Few weeks later, Iran will be disqualified from 2026, and Italy will be named replacement because they do not have time for something better.

Unfortunately, Trump and Netanyahu’s war, supported by GCC, means it is impossible to rule out this possibility. Not to say Infantino is Trump’s ally and has ruled out Iran’s request to change venues from USA to Canada or Mexico.

We have seen this and what happened at AFCON 2025 Final, when Morocco controlled African football institutions from top-down. The pitch does not matter anymore, the state does. The institution does. And when there is a manipulator, all must weigh the impact. Sad.

Didn’t FIFA have a rule that when politics interfers with sports, you get disqualified? Such as when a minister fires a coach or something.  Should apply here as well.

Heard Italians have passion and pride. Glad they rejected.

Would be a joke if this is how they qualify since 2014

L’ Iran merita di partecipare. Ma se non fosse possibile per loro non vedo dove sia il problema ad accettare di partecipare. La Danimarca non ha mica rifiutato il ripescaggio del 1992 all’ Europeo

What is this? Moral stances in international football? Infantino wont like setting this kind of example of turning down a spot you didnt earn. This dudes not getting the 2026 FIFA peace prize Ill tell you that.
