both understand seems well, Kompany and Vinicius đ€
Vincent Kompany, coach of Bayern Munich, defended VinĂcius JĂșnior in February 2026 after a Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon, during which the Brazilian was racially abused. Kompany specifically criticized the reaction of Benfica coach JosĂ© Mourinho as a "major leadership error."
Kompany cited the following reasons for his support:
Protecting the victim from victim-blaming: Mourinho had described VinĂcius' goal celebration as "provocative" and blamed him for the escalation. Kompany countered that one should not attack a player's character to discredit racist incidents.
Credibility of emotions: According to Kompany, VinĂcius' reaction on the pitch was "genuine and emotional" and could not be faked; the player had no advantage in exposing himself to such misery, other than the will to do the right thing.
Historical Context: Kompany refuted Mourinho's argument that Benfica couldn't be racist because their greatest legend, EusĂ©bio, was Black. He pointed to the hardships Black players silently endured in the 1960s and emphasized that VinĂcius now has a voice that many others lack.
Hypocrisy in Goal Celebrations: Kompany recalled Mourinho's own exuberant goal celebrations (such as the famous knee slide at Old Trafford) and insisted that a player deserves respect regardless of their celebration style.
Personal Experience: Kompany spoke of his own experiences with racism as a player and manager and criticized the often-followed "political damage control" that attempts to cover up such incidents.
Kompany later reiterated that football needs âdifferent personalitiesâ like VinĂcius â similar to how Franck RibĂ©ry used to be at Bayern â and that disagreements about a playerâs behavior should never lead to crossing a âred lineâ.

Vini is coming to Bayern isnât he
– Vini inside the pitch is a cunt , he does plays the victim card a lot , and he is always getting away with a lot of the things he does but will complaint and throw a fit when done it back to him. He constantly dives to get an advantage during the game and will not get punished cuz he plays for Madrid
– Now Vini after the game and off the pitch is a very cool dude from what I saw. He actually gets along with their rivals , Barca players like Raphinha and Kounde , and after the match he shake hands with Kimmich and what happened inside the field stays inside the field
– Two things donât have to be mutually exclusive , Kompany has positive experience with Vini even after the Kimmich thing and his dives , while Mourinho has totally opposite experience and the altercations.
– Kompany is such a great guy. Does not complain after the win when he has all the right to do it after constantly getting robbed on both legs but kept his cool and only focus on football
