Noooo guys you don’t get it it was the managers’ fault. You guys don’t get it the midfield in front of them are making it awful to play in and they’re just really upset 🙁

Worst captains in the history of this club

  2. Honestly I would sell both Romero and VDV if we stay up. Not because they dont care or anything g like that but I dont actually think they are as good as their current value.

Romero world class on his day but his day is 1 every 5 games, and then hes banned for the 6th. I also just dont think he is a great club captain, he doesn’t seem present enough. VDV just straight up isnt that good. Because of his novelty speed though he gets a lot of attention and is over valued.

£130m for the pair of them then sensi on a free and Van Dan Beek for 40m would leave us with a better defence, lots of PSR headroom and money to put else where.

  3. At some point it seemed as though Romero and vdv would be as good if not better than Toby and Jan. It looks like such a ridiculous statement now.

Toby is by far the greatest cb I had the chance to watch at spurs.

  4. fucking love you Toby, too often Spurs fans make outlandish claims about how good VDV and Romero are with nothing to back it up

  5. A real leader. Toby is the type of guy who was capable of being captain of the club not like the pretender we have now who is honestly the worst captain in our history hands down.

    Toby absolutely ripped here.

Surgically critical of player quality as the core issue (I think he says “quality” 10x)

He goes in on the squad as a whole tbf, not just those two. He’s not wrong either with our recruitment over the last few years being mid at best.

  8. Bit of a click baity headline but I guess they are the only two players he specifically names. I think he’s making a more general point about the overall quality (or lack of) within the squad.

Love the point he makes about the mentality of the group. Weakest group of players we’ve had in my lifetime and no a leader among them

  9. Thanks to Toby & Jan for showing us what a real cb partnership looks like. They were top class operators

  10. Honestly… some fair criticisms and it carries weight that it comes from Toby, one of the best defenders to play for Spurs.

But let’s not forget that this pairing finished 5th in Ange’s first season. Before the injury crisis when both Romero and VDV got injured for a long period of time in Ange’s 2nd season, Tottenham had one of the best defensive records in the league (edit: I think we were in the top 3 defensive records at the time?). When they came back, the league form remained poor but they were solid in Europe.

I still blame awful coaching for our defensive record, paired with even worse recruitment. Defenders should defend but if the midfield keeps losing the ball, especially in transition, it will always leave the whole team exposed. Our midfield is technically pretty poor.

Finally, regarding Romero’s lapses in judgement – yes, they are a problem. They’re even worse when the whole team is disrupted – he showed that as far back as under Conte in that CL game against Milan (I think). But this season has also made it painfully obvious that EPL refereeing is awful and biased, especially against Romero.

  11. To think that a couple of years ago people were saying Romero was better than Toby and Ledley.

If we had either one of those players today we’d be a minimum 3-4 places higher in the league.
