Ajax have opened talks to sign Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos this summer, with first contacts already made between the clubs. The 29-year-old Spaniard is almost certain to leave the Bernabéu in June. But if Ajax want him, why has Ceballos spent years hinting he wants to go somewhere else?

The news was broken on Thursday by Italian transfer reporter Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio MARCA. Moretto said Ajax have shown concrete interest and that early contacts have taken place. Fichajes and several Spanish outlets picked up the story within hours.

Ceballos has played just 810 minutes across 22 games for Real Madrid this season, starting only seven of them. A calf injury in February did not help, but the bigger issue is simpler. He is stuck behind Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga and Arda Güler. There is no path back to a regular role.

  1. Even if this rumor were true, it sounds like his agent is leaking our interest to drum up more interest.

Not sure this is really the play.. probably on insane wages and not exactly a world beater either

    This doesn’t even make sense

Hahaha! As an Ajax fan I can officially say that, if true, we would be making a fool of ourselves. The Dutch Eredivisie is a small league, perfect for up and coming talents, but definitely to low for big footballers. No chance he would not ho to a top 5 league if he leaves Madrid.
