ON THIS DAY 1994:
Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle travelled to Anfield, weeks before the Kop End was to be demolished.
The stunning and sentimental pre-match atmosphere welcoming of Venison, Beardsley, and Keegan didn’t last long, as the mighty Mags tore up the script, and took the lead through Rob Lee, after neat link up play with Andy Cole.
Liverpool had their moments, but they were lucky to go in at half time only one goal down.
The Reds started the second half with extra vigour, but the Toon were ready to pounce. Srniček catching a set play, throwing out to Sellars, and starting a quick counter attack. Sellars put the through Ruel Fox, who tore up the other end, before playing through Andy Cole to seal the victory. Clinical.
This took the team to 68 points, comfortably in third place, which seemed unfathomable two years prior when Keegan was trying to stop Newcastle United falling to the Third Division.
