I’ll be in the few fans who’s intrigue would wanna see it 😂

Simply as this was always never a possibility in my lifetime in my mind.

He was Bobby’s assistant, that magic will be in there somewhere and just have to hope he can unlock it.

    But no.

I think it’d be a bad move, hes certainly lost a step. That being said, having a banter manager like him with all his antics and being as outspoken as he is would bring a whole new wave of memes and clips. Its still a no though.

  4. It would likely be an unsuccessful time but the entertainment and banter value would be unprecedented.

Terrible football, fallings out with players and staff, enormous payout when it all goes tits up.

    No thanks.

Absolutely not. Toxic, horrible football that’s already been figured out. He’s a wrecker of clubs nowadays and just loves a circus. I’d hate it.

If we really want to embrace being the bad guys, I would absolutely love Simeone though. I know it would never happen, but a man can dream

the one thing that he was known for in his Chelsea years was getting ahead by 1 or 2 goals, then shutting shop & not conceding

If dropping points from a winning position is what we need to focus on it’s not the worst idea

But he always brings a media circus with him & can’t say I’ve paid much attention at all to him since he left PL 8 years or so ago

Is his play style suitable for the PL at the moment ? not convinced

The only nice selling point is the Bobby Robson connection

I’m still a big fan of Howe though despite how badly this season has gone

  8. I’ll say no

But he would be good for one thing. He’d bring standards, and he would demand high expectations of all the players and staff. He won’t have ‘friends’ he’s inexplicably loyal too

I’m just going to paste what I said in the freetalk thread when someone brought it up.

Honestly, while he wouldn’t be my first pick… I think someone like Jose would be good for us. In the same way Rafa was massively good for us, even if he was past his best.

Our recruitment, coaching and fitness team were subject to interventions from Rafa. If you speak to people at or around the club at that time it’s clear how much focus he put into areas that weren’t really where you’d expect him in a drive for professional standards. It’s no shock that Anderson and Miley came through the youth system after that drive. Even if Bruce and Ashley’s neglect did hurt those standards, I personally think Rafa’s work in all areas is why we survived the Bruce years.

He did as much as any single man can do in terms of driving standards and honestly… You can only do that with a name and reputation behind you. When someone with that reputation speaks, people listen.

Now would the same happen with Jose? Well I don’t know, but I know he clashes with owners because he wants more at every stage. He’s combative and edgy and we are a club that’s senior leadership has perhaps been a bit slow and dithering without anyone internally pushing them.

They might benefit from a manager pushing back and holding them to promises and standards as much as anyone below them would. Same for the players and coaching staff around them. Having a Jose coming to you and telling your standards aren’t good enough probably hits more than (with no disrespect intended) a Dan Ashworth, Mitchell or Ross Wilson does.

Jose Mourinho taking you aside and saying “This is how I made Ronaldo the best goalscorer in the world. You need to do the same” has weight.

Do I think tactically he’s the best in the world anymore? No. Do I think he’s the best coach in the world? No. But I do think there’s an argument that what we need right now isn’t a coach. It isn’t a tactician. It’s a manager with a bit of prestige and drive to really push everyone around him to reach his standards, not “collaborate” and find a compromise.

And having a face for the project that we can really say “This is phase 2 of the takeover. We will back Jose Mourinho. We will build him a team to compete with the best by 2030″… Well I think I’ve bought into it completely just writing that out. Having a name like Jose attached makes the 2030 target feel more than just hot air, doesn’t it?

Is he the best manager in the world? No. Not anymore. But he’s someone who brings prestige, drives standards and who probably helps with bringing in and retaining talent. Those are what we need more than anything right now, if you ask me.

  10. His home record would be a disaster, the man can’t win at SJP 😉

In all fairness, he never spoke a bad word about the club and it might bring out the best of him tbh, the whole ‘doing it for Sir Bobby’-thing.

I’d be physically sick if this happened. Things aren’t going well right now but this would be the beginning of the end of any hope we had of being a regular top 6 club. He’d been gone in a year.

  12. I love Jose as a character. He is like a pantomime villain.

But I don’t think I’d want him as manager. His ship has sailed, unfortunately.

  13. Spiritual-Primary328 on

    Good god no. Please no.

Howe may be running out of steam but Mourinho at this stage is just a massive distraction, waste of money, will turn us into an even bigger circus show and we don’t need that.

  14. Can he provide cover at LB. Skeptical of signing someone so old and especially on such high wages and for multiple year. But if it’s a free transfer and the board thinks he’s the right person, I don’t mind it.

  15. Character_Newt_2309 on

    I’m saying yes because

    a) fuck it

    b) it’s been in the stars ever since he was Bobby’s son

But who knows, maybe he would be really excited to join us, and he’d get his special spark back.

This has been rumbling around for almost as long as Eddie has been with the club. Largely from the Jackanory so called footy cottage industry news sites. Wasn’t convinced then and same now. Said then would be a step backwards and still stick by this. Think Man U and Spurs. Instant lost changing rooms and car crash tv.

  17. The media, plastics, septics and mackems are all desperate to see stuff like this happen and the club implode on itself.

For sentiment and his historic image to boost another aspect of our profile, I would support it.

However, Jose isn’t what he was 15 years ago, and would be a far worse option than the likes of Terzic (my preferred pick), Izaghi, De Zebri, etc.

  19. No serious club is going to appoint Mourinho. So perhaps we’ll find out if we’re a serious club or not.
