    ON THIS DAY 2018:

Newcastle were hosting Arsenal at St James’ Park, as they battled for safety in the Premier League in their first season back since promotion.

The Gunners opened the scoring at the Gallowgate, as Lacazette converted Aubemayang’s cross the first goal conceded at St James’ Park since January.

Newcastle equalised a quarter of an hour later, after Kenedy played Yedlin wide, and Pérez then converted the subsequent cross with a clever, elevated side foot finish.

Arsenal had their chances in the second half, but it was Newcastle who got the winner. Slimani’s strong header fell to Pérez, who slotted in Matt Ritchie to smash home the winner in front of the Gallowgate.

This victory took Newcastle past the fabled forty point mark, and all but certainly sealed their Premier League status.
