* United’s current recruitment hierarchy – led by Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell with Carrick and others feeding in – at least seem **to recognise that central midfield is the club’s oldest problem and will handicap progress until it is fixed.**
* **the priority this summer is to overhaul the midfield.**
* As a minimum United will need two midfield recruits
* **Carrick is actively involved in recruiting the kind of all-seeing central midfielder** that has coincidentally – and bafflingly – eluded the club since he arrived in Manchester as Roy Keane’s replacement back in 2006.
* Nottingham Forest’s **Elliot Anderson is greatly admired but costly and Manchester City would appear to be the early frontrunners** for the England midfielder.
* **Sandro Tonali** at Newcastle United has his admirers and **Adam Wharton,** of Crystal Palace, is a dynamic, line-breaking passer and **probably the cheapest option.**
* Beyond that trio, United have previously enquired about Brighton’s **Carlos Baleba** through third parties, **Joao Gomes** is expected to leave Wolves and **Mateus Fernandes** is earning a burgeoning reputation and may see his price fall should West Ham get relegated.
* All have Premier League experience, **although several midfielders in Spain are also thought to be on United’s radar.**

Is Casemiro not a 6?

What was Casemiro then? I know he had a bad season but he was a top 6 for at least some of his time here.

We’ve had Matic, Carrick and Casemiro over the last 20 years though?

I wonder who the Spanish midfielders are

The problem is there are only a handful of elite 6’s in the world most of the time. It’s not for lack of trying either, but it’s been an ongoing issue for sure.

If we could get hold of Gomes and Wharton for less than £100m total that’d be great. Both good players and it’d let us address weak spots like LW/LB as well without breaking the bank.

Except we have one at the moment. Not for much longer but to call Casemiro in this form anything but a top no 6 seems blasphemous. One of the midfield greats of our time in a rich vein of form and a huge reason for our success this season
