It’s baffling how we can’t do the basic stuff

While I agree, he didn’t do himself any good shortly after as he stood still and let their mid walk through him.
quantIntraining on
everyone just watching him while they stand still.
no a single person moving to provide an angle for him, no runs for a ball into space to get out either.
This is at 1-0 too, if it was at 4-0 I’d somewhat understand it which makes it even worse.

This happens too many times.. U sometimes see Wirtz getting ball, and then no one ran upfront or simply went up too late..

What the actual fuck does Kerkez think he’s doing there?

Jones should have got rid of that ball after that first dummy.
You already beat your man and found space ahead of you, clear the ball.

He also shouldn’t hold the ball too long. If the support not coming, make a quick decision and just boot it long. It’s okay to lost possession and hoping the others can win the second ball as long as he get rid the ball from dangerous area. City whole game is try to choke us on our penalty area, these is one of the example and why most of our play this game isn’t a build up from the back.
cmc_920 on
All I see is Jones holding onto the ball far too long as usual.
FatBoyFaych on
Yes he’s left on his own and that’s shit from the lot of them. But why doesn’t he just get rid? He does this far too frequently

It’s almost like a protest. Not unheard of for teams to do this. I don’t agree with it, but I think they want Slott gone as much as we do.

What is wrong with Jones just smashing the ball up the line and getting the ball out of our half so we can get the shape sorted out. Even when he takes the ball down he can clear the ball up the line.
TremendousCoisty on
The team aren’t helping him, but he should just clear his lines tbh.
GTACOD on
This has been a problem since Klopp. No one moves to open up an option for a pass.

I see op’s point. But really the issue is out of position & Curtis Jones was particularly poor. He failed to track Cherki’s move to the right flank that created 3 v 2 overload, then also didn’t cover the near post after VVD went to provide on the near post for an easy goal for Haaland.
Everyone was really poor defensively, and you could see that we defended quite well when we stuck to the plan. Salah’s chance comes from good defensive work. but then the front line stopped putting an effort in, with Wirtz & Curtis’s lack of effort being key to conceding that 2nd goal.

Kerkez catching strays – what’s he supposed to do? Move to the by line and get pressed as well? Jones should’ve put his foot through it.

I really do not like Kerkez. He doesn’t have top football IQ

He should’ve booted it because he saw he was getting no cover.
What happened with Kerkez and Wirtz during that sequence and right after is inexcusable though.

why did we suddenly lose our basic? these players aren’t youngsters and are international capped players. most of them.
no one knows how to mark, or run into spaces anymore.

It’s not right but it’s not hard to understand why no one is busting his ass to provide an option to a player who they know won’t pass / will hold onto the ball way too long to make the pass an option. There’s one of these overly dribbly boys in every sunday football team.

There’s no natural defensive minded midfielder on the pitch. In situations where the ball moves into our half quickly, they’re almost always caught too far forward.

Yes we didn’t give him too many options, but honestly this is on himself, he always does this where he wants to beat his man again and again. He did one dummy well, good now attempt a pass!
waisonline99 on
All that standing around waiting for the ball went on all match.
Only Etitike and Wirtz would actually pass and move.
Although on this occassion it was just another poor decision from Jones.
He had plenty of time to do the right thing and just clear the ball, which is what everyone must have been expecting.

Tbh, he looked like he was away on his first fake turn. Completely sold the city player, but decided to do what he always does and just pivot on the ball multiple times and it put him in hot water. He really could have traveled with the ball at that point. After the 2nd fake turn though, the player was too close to get away.
Living_a_Dejavu on
Idk what you are arguing. The players in the screen are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing.
Once they move City players would move too, so they are not moving to leave the passing lanes open. There are two passing lanes for a player in that position. 1- back to GK 2- down the line. Haaland goes and marks the goalie. There is a clear pass to Ekitike there which Jones decided not to play. The blame is on Jones not others here.
Interestingly enough, if he had played Ekitike had a one touch pass available to Wirtz which would have set us on a nice counter with numerical advantage.
Jones’ decision making is terrible, both here and in general.

That’s the issue with us, no movement from the players to provide options and the lack of workrate to track back during counters.
