After Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, many Italian pundits have blamed the high number of foreign players in Serie A. The argument is that this limits opportunities for Italian players to get regular playing time and, as a result, to reach the level required for international competition.
However, the data do not really support this view. Italy does have a significant share of foreign players in Serie A, but this is not dramatically different from other major European leagues. The real gap, compared to countries like France, Spain, or Germany, lies elsewhere: far too few Italian players are actually playing abroad. In this respect, Italy lags behind almost every other top footballing nation.
If that’s the case, the solution may not be to “defend” by restricting foreign players, but rather to improve the “attack”: encouraging and enabling young Italian players to move abroad and test themselves regularly in the strongest leagues.

Are there a lot of Italians abroad?
Aside from the ones at premier league, I can’t think of good Italian players abroad
What I’ve noticed is that Italian players either have a once-in-life occasion in a Premier League club or they remain in Italy, you never see them playing for a average good team in Bundesliga or in Spain or whatever
if you really think having 70% foreigners is a good thing, I must disappoint you.
peak serie a was when they where just ~30% foreigners playing
besides, the serie a is the 2nd strongest league after the PL.
The foreigners are filling the gap of lack of Italian talent, whom is directly related to lack of academy investment.

Il problema è sempre uno: perché i giocatori più tecnici e con un grande potenziale gli troviamo in serie D e C? Perché quelle squadre non hanno il coraggio di valorizzare la rosa con giocatori di qualità e non i soliti giganti alti 1,80 fino a 2,00 che non sono in grado tecnicamente di offrirmi molto a livello di dribbling, velocità e passaggi?
Noi non abbiamo il coraggio di voler capire che noi alleniamo i nostri giovani come se fossero ancora gli anni 90 degli ex-paesi sovietici e non cerchiamo neanche di capire che addestrare un giocatore a seguire solo la tattica non basta.
Se oggi non trovi nessuno in piazza a calciare un pallone e perché è pure colpa nostra se abbiamo snaturato la vita nostra con regole molto rigide non permettendo ai bambini di divertirsi la fuori? Oppure la prima cosa che fanno gli anziani infastiditi dal loro orticello e solo quello di chiamare la polizia perché infastiditi da un pallone allora facciamo cosa mettiamo una legge che verso le 14:00 fino alle 16:00 non ci debba essere nessun rumore ma dopo le 16:00 fino alle 22:00 i ragazzi sono liberi nel giocare a pallone.
Perché è chiaro anche che oggi un ragazzino povero senza che faccia sacrifici tra i suoi parenti non può entrare in uno sport come il calcio ha causa degli enormi costi.
Se noi non riusciamo ad accettare il diverso noi verremmo sempre visti come un Paese socialmente chiuso e io voglio che il mio Paese sia un Paese fatta di pace e giustizia con forte accento italiano, che non ci siano bianchi o neri divisi.
Il mio problema sarà sempre è solo che ci servono riforme e quelli che lavorano onestamente all’interno del calcio italiano devono fare la GUERRA per ottenere quelle riforme che stiamo aspettando da più di 20 anni.
