    ON THIS DAY 2025:

More than a fortnight after the greatest match of most of our lives, and the two week party to celebrate the Cup win, Newcastle returned to action at St James’ Park under the lights.

The opening goal came from a stunning cross from the right wing, right out of the nineties, from Murphy for Isak to volley home.

Brentford equalised after Pope conceded a penalty which was converted by Mbeumo.

The winning goal was like none I have ever seen at St James’ Park, as Tonali received the ball far on the right, and thundered an absolute rocket in from an inconceivable angle.

Although in a post-match interview, the Italian confirmed that it was “70% cross, 30% shot.” It didn’t make it any less glorious a winner.

I remember Tonali saying it was maybe 60% cross, 40% shot, then when Murphy does the same a game or two later he just says it was 100% a shot. Classic Murph.
