David Beckham on Trent not being called up to the NT: “I’ve heard so many times about, ‘He’s not as good at defending as he is attacking’. Well, sometimes you have to accept that. I’d find it very hard not to take someone like Trent. I’m a massive fan of him, I love him as a player”

  1. The big thing is both are Madridistas. Let’s see if he’s called up to the World Cup

  2. we’ll be there making the first noise when england trail by 1 goal and seem clueless with their passes and creativity

  3. Fine by me, with the butchers we have as a medical team the fewer games he plays the better

  4. Not starting him might be justifiable, but not calling him to the world cup at all is nuts

It’s Tuchel’s call I think if he could avoid media hysteria he’d avoid calling Bellingham too.

  6. As a fan of a club, why is it so important for players to be called up to their national team? I’m a fan of Real Madrid. Not the English Men’s National Team. The less players play, the better they can perform for the team I care about. It’s irrational to worry about players from our club not getting called to their national team. The players might feel sad because of hurt national pride, but ultimately they’re here and playing for the team that pays them.

it’s a classic debate: do you pick a more “complete” player, or someone exceptional in one area who can win you matches? Beckham is clearly in the second camp and it’s hard to argue against that.

i do think there is an argument that it’s harder to incorporate a player with glaring strengths and weaknesses into a national team than into a club team (unless it’s a player that you center the team around)
