  1. In Villa’s Premier League era, he ranks 5th behind Little and Atkinson (who won something) and Emery and O’Neill (who hasn’t/didn’t but made us a PL player again). They’d be my top 4.

Gregory built quite a team in 1998/99, we were top at Christmas, and I was in the Holte End as a young lad. The team was all English which added to their allure in a time when the foreign players were considered a cheat code with their silky skills and were dominating the league.

He played a formation which flipped between 3-5-2 and 5-3-2 depending on need. We had a quality if erratic goalkeeper in David James, an extremely solid back 3 consisting of Southgate, Ugo and a baby Gareth Barry, with Ian Taylor, Alan Thompson and Lee Hendrie providing goals and steel in midfield. Alan Wright and Steve Watson buccaneering from wingback. Up front we had Dion Dublin and Julian Joachim as a quality big man-little man partnership.

I don’t think he ever really recovered from losing the FA Cup Final in 2000. Oh what could have been if he’d got a major trophy under his belt!

But he gave us some great moments and really cared about the club.
