Red card or not, Fede should have known better than this. Specially in front of a ref who just loves red cards.
Also if you watch the clip on normal speed, you can see the force applied to this tackle could have caused an injury.
Let’s be real and not pretend if this tackle was against Vini we’d be okay with it.
What is really not okay is the lack of consistency (perhaps on purpose) of La Liga ref.

He definitely puts a lot of force in the tackle but it’s clear he was going for the ball and not baena’s leg so I can’t see how it’s a straight red. Studs aren’t high and it isn’t a denial of a goal scoring opportunity as well.

Tbh the more I watch it the more I lean towards a red card

ppl it is a fking baena why would valverde go for the ball.

Yellow? Sure. Red? Never. State of laliga refereeing has become abysmal.
Next, Technical Referee Committee will say the ref made a mistake and it shouldnt have been red but at the same time the publishment to Fede will stand.

Bro seems harsh but looks very fair from this angle.

He’s going for the ball, Definitely but not a foul that warrants a red card.
I can understand red cards for sliding tackles or high boot but this is as normal as a missed tackle can get.
Considering the red card he gave to Bellingham last season, It’s clear as day that this was a premeditated red card.

For me that’s a “yellow and next strike you’re out even if it’s light shirt-pulling” sort of foul. Straight red is too harsh, it’s upper foot against upper foot, not studs to ankle (which would have then warranted a deserved straight red).
Snickeeeeers80 on
Imo it’s not too shocking of a decision, it’s a lil soft but just enough for a red. I just wish they were consistent with these calls but every ref follows a different set of rules

Liverpool fan in peace. Neutral towards Real Madrid despite you beating us in all the UCL finals. I couldn’t believe that was a red card when I saw it. I think it is a first yellow. I don’t even know if most referees would give a second yellow for it.

Yellow at most

If it was vini, it would have been a regular foul or yellow. No way in hell is that a straight red
kanon951 on
Barely a yellow if we compare it with the kind of fouls Vini receives every match.
But this referee is one of those that benefited from the Negreira system that to this day still lingers.
Independent_Media341 on
to me, it’s worse than a common foul, but… if that’s a straight red, no match should end with 22 players on the pitch

As a Barca fan, it’s crazy this is a red. This is your standard bloody
The state of refereeing in La Liga has become so insanely low quality, every top game it feels like you have superstars on both teams and then a referee who wants to be a superstar in his own way.
We always argue “Oh referee’s are for Barca/Madrid” but truth is it is a fucking coin flip every time whether the referee will benefit which team on any given matchday.
UlfricStormcloak1097 on
No matter how I look at it, I just can’t shake the feeling that it isn’t a red. I literally try to not look at it from a fan’s point of view, but it simply doesn’t look like a red nor does it remind me of a similar tackle being labeled as a red.

Not even a yellow card. Vini gets fouled like this all the time and refs don’t even call a foul let alone a card.
Man fuck this league I’m so sick and tired of it and it’s getting worse by the year and nothing is being done about it.

I saw the foul from the stands and said to my partner I thought the ref would book him for it.
Entire stadium erupted in shock and disdain when the red card came out. I still can’t believe it but so glad we were able to hang on and win!

Maybe a soft call but not unreasonable he tackled from behind and it does look pretty risky
bworthy621 on
I think the ref took into account their past history (Fede beat him up lol). I think it’s a strong yellow. Red is harsh. But it does look a bit violent at first glance so I can see why someone would give red.
