Went down a bit of a rabbit hole after a conversation with my dad in the car.
We were driving through the M8 at Shieldhall and he was talking about how he remembers playing on the famous 50 pitches there before they were destroyed by the M8.
Every boy of his generation in Glasgow probably played on them one time or another. He mentioned how they were all red ash pitches bar one grass – which was used for ‘big games’ like cup finals.
I had my own similar experience playing at Toryglen before it was redeveloped. Does anyone else remember playing on the red ash pitches there?
I was trying to find pictures of it on Google and couldn’t find any at all. My memory of it was a handful of pitches around this single little concrete building in the middle that looked like it could have been a defence fortification in Normandy. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else recollects.
I remember slicing my leg on a broken gingie bottle as a wee boy – good times.

Im in my 40’s and between ages of 9 and 18 i played on hundreds of ash pitches. To be honest, sometimes they were better than the quagmire long grass ones, but overall id prefer grass obviously. Im not overly loving astro, seem to get too many injuries – although maybe because im old.
