Funnily enough, the theological distinction between ‘convert’ and ‘revert’ is a genuinely significant one within Islamic doctrine and is not merely a semantic preference. The reasoning stems from the foundational Islamic belief known as ‘Fitra’, which is an Arabic term referring to the innate, natural disposition that every human being is believed to be born with, that disposition being an inherent inclination toward monotheism and, by extension, Islam itself. This concept is outlined in several Hadith, most notably a narration attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Sahih al-Bukhari, in which it is stated that every child is born upon the Fitra.
The practical implication of this belief is that no individual can technically ‘convert’ TO Islam, because to convert implies moving from one belief system to another as though they are of equal starting positions. Islam, under this framework, is understood to be the default state of the human soul, meaning that any individual who embraces the faith is not adopting something new, but rather returning to something they were always fundamentally aligned with at the point of their creation. Hence, ‘revert.’
Anyway. Dundee United won. As-salamu alaykum.
