BBC Scotland now running an elimination poll to find Scotland’s most iconic goal. 16 to choose from, all viewable from the link (in the UK at least). Enjoyable watching those.

Is there any goals that you think could/should have made the list?

I know it was against San Marino, but one that springs to mind for me, John Collins scored one where he ran pretty much the length of the pitch with the ball if memory serves correctly.

  1. For the last 40 years, it has absolutely been gemmell. For a new generation it’s probably going to be McLean v denmark.

Personally, I would’ve included McLean vs Norway away.

Or not a goal obviously, but Marshall penalty save.

  2. So many iconic goals on that list, but Faddy’s against France was one of those “remember where you were” moments.

  3. Nothing will beat McFadden’s goal in Paris. McTominay’s is better on the eye, but that goal in Paris is more iconic imo. Scoring the winner away to France from approx 1 billion yards out beats scoring vs a fat pensioner who we now know had only one functioning arm.

  4. Don’t think it can be anything other than McTominay, the occasion and the goal are unmatched. Think I lost it more at Tierney’s but McTominay’s is special and the best Scotland goal ever

  5. Has to be Gemmill in ‘78 surely. Been referenced so much it’s earned icon status

So it’s one of three yeah? Gemmill vs Holland, Faddy vs France or McTominay vs Denmark.

  7. Tierney’s goal made me feel things I never thought I’d feel.

In terms of combining both importance and beauty, it’s #1 for me.

  8. McFadden against Netherlands at Hampden, Great link up with Fletcher then good finish from McFadden

I’d go for Kenny McLean – if just for the sheer feeling of that fucking monkey being off our backs!

  10. Gemmel – original iconic goal

    Faddy – millennial iconic goal

    Mctominay – new iconic goal

  11. Genuinely find it hard to choose between McFadden, Griffith’s second, or McTominay. And there will always be a special place in my heart for McCoist’s.

Gemmel’s goal is rightly lauded, but it feels like that’s partly because it was the only good Scottish goal for two generations – we’ve had some proper crackers recently.

  12. A year ago, I’d have said Gemmill by some distance, with Faddy 2nd and Leigh Griffiths tied with Leigh Griffiths in 3rd.

Now, it’s McTominay – the confidence and ability to do that in a crowded box, with the pressure in the game, edges Gemmill.

Gemmill is the one my dad always talks about and pulls up in a conversation about great Scotland goals. I suspect I’ll talk about the McTominay goal in a similar manner when I’m his age

  14. If David Seaman hadn’t let a pass back go between his legs against the Dutch then it would be McCoist because it would have been the goal that got us out of the group stages of a tournament.

As it is though it’ll surly be a final 3 of Faddy, Gemmell and McTominay.

Also can’t believe they never put in McTominay’s cock rocket into the top corner against Israel.

  15. Fun fact: Wim Jansen (#6) was one of the Dutch players getting sent for a bitterballen by Archie Gemmill on the way to his goal.
