Jamie Carragher on Newcastle Goal: “In terms of Fofana, Chalobah and Reece James, they are all better players than me in almost everything: physically, height, power, pace. But… I would would have made sure somebody reacted. Stop looking for your coach for instruction You’re a coach on the pitch.”

  1. Probably underrating himself here but I think Carragher’s point is that a defensive leader at the back would’ve been able to easily prevent that goal from happening with simple defensive awareness and communication

He even clarified that it’s not an experience thing and more of an ingrained quality

The point should be man for man marking is terrible with this squad Maresca understood this and it paid dividends last season. Unfortunately Liam either didn’t pay attention or gave the players far to much credit

Its obvious cause we dont have leader in center back. When you look in the past every team who won something had great leadership center back. With Thiago Silva goal like this didnt happen

I wouldn’t say 2 of those 3 are better than he was.

As much of a tit as he can be at times, he was a very good defender.

Repeat after me: no vocal leader in defence. You can partly extend it to the whole pitch.

The thing that got me about this play in particular and what I made sure my kids knew, if they knew nothing else about positioning, etc. is that if you’re a defender, and the ball is between you and the goal, you are on a SPRINT until you are neck into correct positioning.

Well Chalobah is covering Cucurella while he treks forth, Fofana could do better to close that gap but you can’t blame him outright since he’s off the action, Reece though I have to say did a horrible job marking there and probably should’ve been dropped if not for his injury

There is a lot to complain about and second guess about the Clearlake era, but I do wonder if maybe the most impactful departures were exactly their fault in that we lost Rudiger and a Silva at the same time. That said, surely we could have bought a better experienced replacement than Tosin

I’ve been quite disappointed with Reece’s lack of leadership all season. There’s no doubt he loves the club but I really don’t think he’s the right fit for the armband, he’s just not a natural leader.
