There should have been an entry for 1956 too as after winning our first league title the year before Chelsea should have been the first English club to compete in the inaugral European Cup. But the FA stopped us from entering only to allow Manchester United to play in the competition in 1957.
You see…we were even hated by the authorites way back 70 years ago!

This is a nice reminder of how far we’ve come as a club. I’m going to guess that many people in this sub probably weren’t alive/supporting the club during the years prior to our first UCL appearance. We’re in a position of privilege that the club has been hanging around the UCL spots for over 20 years now. It’s something worth tipping the hat to.

2008 lost to winner (in final)
2009 lost to winner

2022 lost to winner
13/19 appearances (not including 2026 season) have had 3 results. Win. Lose to Winner in knockout. Lose to Runner up in knockout. almost half of our champions league results are either win or lose to the winner- 9/19 times its happened.

This infographic just reminds me how much winning in this competition is so dependant on luck and individual brilliance.
We could be sitting on 4 or 5 CLs had the stars aligned for us in some of these seasons.
