After beating Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford, and Arsenal over two legs, Newcastle United faced the league leaders Liverpool at Wembley in the League Cup Final.
Two years on from their 2-0 defeat at Wembley by Manchester United, Eddie’s Mags were back to see if they could finally bring domestic silverware back to Tyneside.
There were concerns before the game, as Lewis Hall had a season ending injury requiring surgery, and Anthony Gordon was suspended for the tie after a foolish red card.
An impressive display from Wor Flags showing an NUFC history book, encouraging this team to write their own story. Black and white flags provided by the club, began an occasion for the ages in West London.
Newcastle started strong, and the first chance came from a long shot, wide of the target from Tonali.
Further chances came in the first half, as Trippier’s shot was blocked. His corner to Burn at the edge of the area was headed on, but Bruno couldn’t convert from close range.
Newcastle had been dominant in the first half, and by far the better team, but hadn’t found the crucial breakthrough.
As half-time beckoned, Trippier put in another outswinger corner ball to the edge of the area. This time, the boy from Blyth, and former Newcastle season ticket holder, Big Dan Burn rose high to hammer a header into the net.
Pandemonium.
One half of Wembley erupted into deafening Geordie ecstasy, as Newcastle’s first goal at Wembley in a quarter of a century was scored by their local hero.
Newcastle made it to half-time after Liverpool had their first chance of the game go wide.
The fans had fifteen minutes to get their breath back from biggest burst of adrenaline the black and whites had felt in a long long time.
Soon after half-time, another Trippier corner was headed across goal by Joelinton, Burn’s subsequent shot was saved, with Isak putting in the rebound, only for the offside flag to go up.
Less than two minutes later, Livramento dribbled down the wing, played a neat one-two with Barnes, before playing a beautiful cross to Murphy, who headed the ball down for Isak to score the second.
Bedlam.
Isak lept on the advertising hoarding to take in the absolute limbs of the Toon Army, as the Magpies could scarcely believe they had scored the second goal they absolutely deserved.
It was hard to believe just how brilliant Newcastle United had been so far. Every player on the pitch was playing out of their skin for the occassion. The midfield were relentless, especially Joelinton, who was playing like a possessed beast all over the park.
Further chances came after Barneso opted to cross rather than shoot from close range, and long shors from Schär and Murphy went wide.
Captain Bruno Guimarães clipped a beautiful ball into Barnes who volleyed a cross just behind Isak, who got a shot away, but struggled to place it.
Liverpool started building momentum late on, and a shot from Jones from outside the area brought out a tremendous save from Nick Pope.
The only mistake from the Captain, was a poor pirouhette in the centre of midfield, saw him dispossessed and then substitute Chiesa score, despite being incorrectly ruled out for offside initially.
A nail biting final few minutes began as Newcastle did everything they did to hold on. Wilson taking the ball into the corner flag, Tonali undying his own laces to tie them again for a yellow card.
Then it happened, the final whistle blew, as Wembley erupted as Newcastle United sealed their first trophy in fifty six years, and their first domestically in seventy years. At last, at long long last, Newcastle United were champions.
I watched this with two of my oldest friends in The Mad Dog & Mags pubs in London, surrounded by delirious, celebrating, sobbing Geordies. Please tell me where you were, and who you were with, when Newcastle United won the 2025 Carabao Cup.

Beautifully written, I forked out £700 for a seat in club Wembley, best money I ever spent!
I got quite lucky that my seats were in the Newcastle half of the stadium, so could celebrate the goals with our fans. There was a few Liverpool fans near me who were not happy!

Was the day after me sister had come home from uni iirc, and me and me family all watched it together. Me Dad who hadn’t seen us sniff a trophy in his life opened the front door and just shouted into the sky in delight at full time. My most treasured memory, and likely always will be. Me mam’s side of the family who support Liverpool were extremely gracious in defeat too.
What made it the most special though is my Grandad, who has severe dementia and could just barely remember me by this stage, was also delighted we won. I’d have rather we won in 2023 when he was still somewhat lucid, but the fact that he managed to see us win something, one last time, really gave me some closure, especially given he loved telling me stories of how he played football all day as a kid and listened to us win the FA Cup on the radio.

The sight of Shearer losing his mind when Burn headed home. Worth ALL the suffering.
