No one can say Reece James has not earned this new deal.

To even get back to being consistently available has taken significant willpower and hard graft. One source, speaking to The Athletic in late December explained how the England international almost lives at the training ground, he's been seen doing so much work on his fitness and game there. James’ attitude is exactly the kind of example you would want set at your club.

It is no coincidence that every coach he has worked with raves about him either, Liam Rosenior being the latest. Predecessor Enzo Maresca highlighted one negative early on in his first season about wanting to see more from James as a captain. Just before he left at the start of January, the Italian revealed his delight at how much James has grown in this area.

His renaissance at club level has also been recognised at international level and there is now a very good chance he will start at the World Cup.

This should be regarded as James’ success story. Chelsea and England are simply the ones to benefit from it.

There shouldn’t even be a discussion about his meriting at this point, but about ours as a club

  2. There’s 0 questions about James starting at the World Cup if he’s healthy. Trent isn’t the same he was a few years ago, Trippier is washed, Walker is washed and retired from international football. Livramento’s development has been stunted by injuries. Tuchel loves him too from his time at Chelsea. James is probably the first name on the team sheet alongside Kane and Rice.

  3. I really would wish we drop the Reece in midfield idea.

While he can play there and should play there when we don’t have midfielders fit we really need him at RB.

But right now with have Enzo, Caicedo, Lavia, Santos and Essugo all fit.

Our defence is shit and we need our captain back there to solidify it.

  4. At this point the question is more whether the club merits James committing his long term future.

  5. Hes come all way through the club and is now captain, this is no shock to anyone. But can he get other key players to commit when we finish in a Europa spot, i dont think so…

My goat. I can’t tell you how happy I am that he is back and playing like he is.

  7. Anyone who’s experienced injury setbacks playing sports knows how difficult it is mentally to keep working. The fact he’s returned just as strong as before despite so much pressure from rival fans (and our own tbh) is a testament to his psychological strength.

Proper captain, and touch wood he finally gets his shot for England at the Word Cup.

  8. One of the most talented footballers this club has ever produced. Even from his days at Wigan it was clear he was destined to go right to the very top.
