Jamie Carragher on Chelsea vs PSG: “Early stages of Rosenior have been brilliant tactically. Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5-2 but individual mistakes from the center back and goalkeeper cost them massively and that will continue to be the issue for any manager at Chelsea going forward.”

  1. I do not want Rosenior to be sacked and I am not Rosenior out or anywhere near that

But I have little faith Rosenior will succeed or for any manager because the board are so unwilling to properly support them

Maresca said he needed a better centre back during the summer window, instead he was told to work with what he had and that they were good enough but the reality that they’re not has been clear as day for a **long** time

Don’t even think the goalkeeper situation is that bad **if** you use Sanchez correctly, he was amazing under Maresca for 90% of his games this season and the club world cup. The Jorgensen experiment needs to die (again)

Everybody can see this but the people who can actually do something about it.

Hate to agree with carra on anything but he’s not wrong. Unless the club invest in experienced top quality players in defence and gk and stop this obsession with buying bang average players nowhere near chelsea level, we will not be able to compete with the best

The team looked good in the attack but theres a reason most fans wanted Sanchez to start.

In big games you start the first choice keeper, it’s that fucking simple. We lost because Rosenior wanted to use a keeper that is bad at shot stopping.

It pains me to say it but very very rare good and reasonable take from Carragher on Chelsea.

  6. Rosenior fucked us by starting Jorgensen. To introduce this uncertainty around the goalkeeper at this stage of the season is so stupid. You will concede shots against a side like PSG and therefore you need a keeper that can save them…..

  7. I think Rosenior is doing good job.

However he simply does not have a great GK and strong pairing of CBs and they are prone to make mistakes. We knew this and its expected. I did not blame mistakes of GK or CBs on Maresca or Poche, I will not blame Rosenior.

There is no good solution – he keeps in Sanchez, half of the fans will be upset if he makes mistake and will be crying “I told you so”. If he puts in Jorge, the other half will be crying he is using backup GK.

Same with any mistake from CBs.

We played solid game against PSG and could have easily win it, tied it or at worst be 1 behind. Massive mistakes from GK just made it a loss.

Anyway, this is our 3rd loss in 16 games under Rosenior. 2 against Arsenal, 1 against PSG, 2 of the best teams in the world. We won 10 games out of those 16.

Sporting directors when literally everyone says we need better GKs and CBs

  9. Same old story.

We’ll never win enough of these big games when we continue to have players who are prone to making mistakes. Can’t keep having to score at least 2–3 goals every time to win games.

  10. I don’t agree with starting Jorgenson.

But acting like Sanchez doesn’t make very similar mistakes playing out is absolute revisionism. He may well have done exactly the same as Jorgensen did.

In terms of shots maybe one was saveable, the rest were incredibly high quality shots. Jorgenson also had a couple of surprisingly good saves.

Sanchez also looked poor against both arsenal and Wrexham. He hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory

  11. I can’t stand the guy, Carragher that is, but he’s right. Not that it’s a particularly astute point. Everyone and their dog knows that certain players just aren’t good enough to playing regularly for us.

That being said, whilst the tactics were generally decent, and we absolutely could’ve got something without individual mistakes. Rosenior still deserves massive blame for the stunt with the goalkeeper. There’s no defending that.

Maybe Rosenior could’ve also just stopped playing the fucking keepers out the back so much. A prime Ederson keeper isn’t going to fall out of the sky. Not many clubs have the quality to play like this.

  13. This is mostly spot on, but it shouldn’t shield the manager and board from responsibility.
Jorgensen didn’t select himself to be a starter again and playing from the back against some of the best pressing in world football. Just like the centrebacks don’t play bingo to have a billion different partnerships throughout the season.

  14. AKA Carragher says Chelsea need a solid CB pairing.

The BS with this board wanting every winger available but only going in for some mid-table CB at best is getting under my skin. Splash the cash where we need it! We don’t need wingers especially with Quenda coming in next year, Estevao almost back, etc. Get CB’s please

  15. The defense has been the main issue for a while now.

I wouldnt even be surprised if we score 3 in the home leg, but no way do we keep a clean sheet. So the tie is over

Its good to invest in youth and young talents. Nobody is saying it isnt good. But there are times where you just have to fucking go out there, spend a bit of money and get proven players who have been there and done that, people who you can rely on. Other big clubs understand that, but for some fucking reason Eghbali and co refuse.

We needed a CB and a proper GK. They were available. This ownership went back to the usual “work with what we have, we trust out players” bullshit. I hate this ownership with a passion.

This is true. I hate to agree with Carragher, but he makes a point I actually agree with. All French centre-backs need to be sold. Lavia needs to go. We need an additional CDM with legs that dont tire, to play Carbao cup, lower FA cup and lower league games. Mike Penders needs to be given an additional year at Strassbourg, two if possible. A Ball playing GK, with Sanchez as backup, and Jorgensen is at best the third choice.
