After a brilliant away win at Brighton days earlier, Newcastle faced another Championship title challenger away, as they travelled to the John Smith’s Stadium.
United took the lead, in the 10th minute after an admittedly, very soft penalty decision. There has nothing soft however about Ritchie smashing it in to the net in front of the away end.
United doubled their lead after a mix up at the back, saw Darryl Murphy slot in from a narrow angle, through the keeper’s legs and past the defender on the line.
In the second half, an equally soft penalty was awarded to Huddersfield, which Mooy converted comfortably.
The pressure soon ramped up, as Huddersfield had chance after chance. Karl Darlow made some important saves, as Mooy controlled the midfield, and Newcastle sat back.
A long clearance out of defence in injury time, and a mix up again at the back, caused Huddersfield keeper to mistime a header at the halfway line backwards, for substitute Gayle to calmly head in to an open net.
A brilliant performance, to cap a brilliant week, as Newcastle United now stood five points clear at the top of the Championship.
