      ON THIS DAY 2024:

      After conceding twelve goals in their last four games, Howe attempted a tactical tweak in which rather than playing their high pressing style, they instead sat off and tried to catch their opponents on the counter, to great success.

      All three moves were started by long balls out from Fabian Schär as Newcastle pounced on the counter each time to score.

      The first saw Bruno’s saved shot fall in front of Isak.
      The second saw Murphy’s saved cross fall in front of Gordon.

      The third came a mazy run from Livramento, with an almost clumsy finish to seal his first Premier League goal.

      The new approach clearly caught Gary O’Neil off guard and helped Newcastle to all three points.
