He’s getting older, been carrying a knock for over a year and can’t keep up with the change of pace in the league. Not sure it’s more complicated than that.

It’s a World Cup year. Regardless of whether villa want to get rid of him I’m sure he’d want to play well to get in the England squad. In fact I don’t think he’s the kind of person that would deliberately not perform. Always seems like he’s got really high standards and he’d want to give his best no matter what. I think it’s injury and confidence that has affected him more than anything.
