    ON THIS DAY 2002:

Sir Bobby’s men travelled to the Stadium of Light with Mr Robson looking for his first win in a Tyne-Wear derby.

The deadlock was broken in the second half, as Greek defender Nikos Dabizas climbed highest to convert Robert’s free-kick. He had been a man possessed from the first whistle, having numerous attempts kept out in the first half. Upon converting, the Greek centre back ripped his shirt off, swinging it in delight in front of a delirious away end.

Although Dabizas’s goal will always be remembered, the hero of the day was Shay Given, who pulled off three of the best saves you may ever see, further earning his pedigree as one of the best shot stoppers in the Premiership.

Despite the Mackem’s attempts, it finished one nil to the Geordies, as the away end went ballistic, Sir Bobby smiled, and the Toon went second in the league.
