Hi everyone,

I followed calcio for almost my whole life, but especially from 1999 to 2009 that was the period when I didn’t just follow it, I lived it during my teenage and young adult years. One thing I loved, besides the football itself and not just for my team, but for all teams was when clubs brought their players together to sing the anthem or a famous song connected to the club.

For example, Inter’s “Amala”; or the Roma-born players like Totti, Aquilani, De Rossi and Curci singing “La Roma che conosco”; Il Mio canto libera and Soria di un grande amore from Juventus or even the Italian national team singing “Azzurro”.

I don’t know if it was simply a different time on the internet, when creating a connection between fans and the team was the main goal, rather than merchandising, selling products, or turning players into internet celebrities. However, I wonder if this kind of thing doesn’t exist anymore? Or maybe it was just part of the spirit of that era, like the Nike commercials of the time.

Does anyone living in Italy now know if it was just a trend that faded away, or if it was something more cultural? I’ve never really seen it in other leagues. And does any modern version of it still exist?

For who does not know, follow the songs and clips:
