In this episode we see Ousmane Dembélé in one of his greatest performances during the 2015/16 season against Nantes. His team; Rennes were going into this derby (Derby Breton) tied on 41 pts with Nantes, and a win would put them as high as 3rd in the League with only 9 games remaining in the season. Dembélé only started playing on a professional level 4 months before this game and was already involved in 9 goals in 16 games up until this match. He destroyed the Nantes defence and quite literally could’ve had 6 goals. He scored a hat-trick in only the 1st half to put the game to bed. The game ended 4-1 as Rennes completed the double over their fierce rivals, but they couldn’t quite make it in the top 4. Losing 5 of their last 6 games to end the season in 7th place. The 18 year old finished with 12 goals and 5 assists in 33 games. Borussia Dortmund signed him that summer for €15M and well the rest is history!

“The Match That Made” is a new series that I’m experimenting with. The concept is to show the superstars of today, in their best performance of the season before they got signed to a top club. Of course 1 game doesn’t make the player who they are today but those special performances are the ones that catch the eyes of world watching!
